Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic life cycle of chickens and their importance in our lives.

Materials and Prep

  • Internet access or books about chickens
  • Pen and paper

Activities

  1. Start by discussing what the student already knows about chickens. Ask questions like:

    • "What do chickens look like?"
    • "What do they eat?"
    • "Where do they live?"

Write down their responses on a piece of paper.

  2. Next, show the student pictures or videos of different stages in the life cycle of a chicken. Discuss each stage and explain it in simple terms:

    • "Chickens start as eggs."
    • "Then they hatch and become chicks."
    • "Chicks grow into adult chickens."
  3. Ask the student to draw or color pictures of each stage of the chicken life cycle. Encourage them to label the different parts of the chicken's body.

  4. Finally, have a discussion about why chickens are important to us. Talk about how we get eggs and meat from chickens, and how they help control pests in gardens and farms.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Chickens are animals that have feathers and lay eggs."
  • "They start as eggs, then hatch into baby chicks, and eventually grow into adult chickens."
  • "Chickens are important because they give us eggs and meat that we can eat."
  • "They also help us by eating insects and pests that can harm our crops."
