Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe basic geometric shapes found in a caterpillar.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or crayons
- Printed pictures of caterpillars
- Scissors
Activities
- Introduction: Show the printed pictures of caterpillars and discuss how they have different shapes on their bodies. Ask the student to identify the shapes they see.
- Shape Hunt: Take a walk outside and look for objects that resemble the shapes found on caterpillars. Encourage the student to point out circles, ovals, rectangles, and triangles.
- Caterpillar Art: Give the student a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw their own caterpillar using the shapes they found during the shape hunt. Assist them in cutting out the shapes and arranging them to create their caterpillar.
- Shape Sorting: Prepare a collection of small objects or pictures of objects with different shapes. Ask the student to sort them into groups based on their shapes. Guide them in identifying and labeling the shapes.
- Caterpillar Collage: Provide the student with a variety of materials such as colored paper, buttons, and pipe cleaners. Encourage them to create a caterpillar collage using different shapes and textures.
