Mirabelle's Awesome '-at' and '-ad' Adventure!
A fun, 5-day reading plan for a 6-year-old, focusing on short 'a' word families. Each lesson is designed to be 15-20 minutes.
Core Learning Objectives
- Mirabelle will be able to phonetically blend consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words.
- Mirabelle will be able to decode and read words from the '-at' and '-ad' word families.
- Mirabelle will demonstrate comprehension by matching words to pictures and using them in creative ways.
- Mirabelle will apply her new reading skills by creating a simple, original storybook.
Materials Needed for the Week
- Index cards or small pieces of paper
- Markers (different colors)
- A shallow tray (like a baking sheet)
- Sensory material for the tray (e.g., salt, sugar, or sand)
- Play-Doh
- Several sheets of paper and a stapler for a mini-book
- Picture books you already own that might contain '-at' or '-ad' words (e.g., The Cat in the Hat)
Curriculum Alignment
This lesson plan aligns with common Kindergarten English Language Arts standards, focusing on:
- Phonological Awareness: Orally blending sounds to make words (/c/ /a/ /t/ -> "cat").
- Phonics and Word Recognition: Demonstrating knowledge of letter-sound correspondence and decoding regularly spelled one-syllable words.
Day 1: Meet the '-at' Family
Today's Goal: Mirabelle will be able to identify the sounds in "-at," blend them together, and read at least three '-at' family words (cat, sat, mat).
- Warm-up: Sound Detectives (5 mins)
- Say, "Let's be sound detectives! What sound does 'apple' start with?" Guide her to the short /a/ sound.
- Next, ask, "What sound do you hear at the end of 'boat'?" Guide her to the /t/ sound.
- On an index card, write "at" in large letters. Explain, "When we put the /a/ sound and the /t/ sound together, they make a special family sound: '-at'. Let's say it together fast: at, at, at!"
- Activity: Word Building Magic (10 mins)
- Write the following letters on separate index cards: c, s, m, h, b, r.
- Place the "-at" card down. Say, "Let's use magic to make new words!"
- Slide the 'c' card in front of the 'at' card. Model how to blend it: "c-c-c... at. Cat! We made the word 'cat'!" Have her repeat.
- Let her choose the next letter card. Help her slide it in place and blend the new word (e.g., sat, mat, hat, bat, rat). Cheer for each new word created.
- After making 3-4 words, quickly flash them to her and see if she can read them.
- Wrap-up: Action Words (2 mins)
- Call out an action word you made. "Can you pretend to be a cat?" "Can you show me how you sat on the floor?" This connects the words to meaning and movement.
Day 2: Creative '-at' Words
Today's Goal: Mirabelle will be able to form at least four '-at' words using sensory materials and draw a picture to match one of them.
- Warm-up: Quick Review (3 mins)
- Show her the '-at' card from yesterday and the single letter cards. Quickly build and read 2-3 words together to refresh her memory.
- Activity: Word Sculptors & Magic Writing (12 mins)
- Part 1: Play-Doh Words. Take out the Play-Doh. Say, "Let's build some '-at' words!" Have her roll out snakes of Play-Doh to form the letters for 'cat' or 'hat'. This is great for kinesthetic learning and reinforcing letter shapes.
- Part 2: Magic Writing. Bring out the shallow tray with salt/sand. Take one of the '-at' word cards (e.g., 'mat'). Have her say the word, then use her finger to write it in the salt. She can "erase" it by gently shaking the tray. Let her choose 2-3 more words to write this way.
- Wrap-up: Draw Your Word (5 mins)
- Ask her to choose her favorite '-at' word she made today. On a piece of paper, she can draw a picture of it. While she draws, ask her about it. "Oh, you drew a rat! What is the rat doing?" This encourages comprehension and oral language.
Day 3: Discovering the '-ad' Family
Today's Goal: Mirabelle will be able to identify the '-ad' sound and read at least three new words from the '-ad' family (dad, sad, mad).
- Warm-up: Sound Comparison (5 mins)
- Say, "Today we have a new word family visiting! This is the '-ad' family." Write "ad" on a new index card.
- Practice the /d/ sound. "It's the sound at the beginning of 'dog' or 'dinosaur'. d-d-d."
- Blend the new family name: "/a/ /d/... ad!"
- Put the 'at' and 'ad' cards next to each other. Say them one after the other. Ask her, "Do they sound the same or different? What part is different?" Help her feel how her mouth changes at the end.
- Activity: Meet the '-ad' Words (10 mins)
- Create new letter cards: d, s, m, p, l.
- Just like on Day 1, use the letter cards to build words with the '-ad' family card (dad, sad, mad, pad, lad).
- Focus on the meaning. After reading 'sad,' make a sad face together. After 'mad,' make a silly mad face. After 'dad,' give a thumbs-up for dads!
- Wrap-up: Feeling Words (3 mins)
- Ask, "Can you show me a time you were sad?" or "What makes you not mad?" This connects the words to her own life and emotions, making them more memorable.
Day 4: '-at' vs '-ad' Word Sort
Today's Goal: Mirabelle will correctly sort at least six mixed word cards into '-at' and '-ad' groups.
- Warm-up: Two Families (3 mins)
- Place the '-at' and '-ad' family cards on a table, spaced apart. Read each one with Mirabelle. "This is the home for '-at' words, and this is the home for '-ad' words."
- Activity: Word Sorting Game (12 mins)
- Create word cards with one word on each: cat, dad, sat, sad, mad, hat.
- Shuffle the cards. Have her pick one card at a time.
- Ask her to read the word aloud. (Help her blend if she needs it).
- Then ask, "Does that word belong to the '-at' family or the '-ad' family? Listen to the ending sound."
- She then places the word card under the correct family heading ('-at' or '-ad'). Make it a fun game!
- Differentiation: If this is too hard, use pictures instead of words. If it's too easy, add more words (rat, pad, mat, lad).
- Wrap-up: Rhyme Time (3 mins)
- Pick up all the '-at' words. Say, "Listen! Cat, sat, hat, mat. They all rhyme!" Do the same with the '-ad' words. Reinforce that word families are rhyming words.
Day 5: Reading for Real & Mini-Book Creator
Today's Goal: Mirabelle will read simple sentences containing '-at' and '-ad' words and create her own 3-page mini-book using these words.
- Warm-up: Sentence Reading (5 mins)
- Write 2-3 simple sentences on strips of paper. Use only words she knows (sight words like 'the', 'a', 'is', 'on') and her new '-at'/'-ad' words.
- The cat sat on a mat.
- Dad is not mad.
- A sad rat sat.
- Point to each word as she reads. Celebrate her success as a real reader!
- Write 2-3 simple sentences on strips of paper. Use only words she knows (sight words like 'the', 'a', 'is', 'on') and her new '-at'/'-ad' words.
- Activity: Be the Author! (12 mins)
- Take 3 sheets of paper, fold them in half, and staple them to make a small book.
- Tell her, "You are an author and illustrator! You get to make your very own book about the '-at' and '-ad' words."
- On each page, she can choose a word (e.g., 'cat', 'dad', 'sad'). Help her write the word (or she can trace it).
- Then, she draws a picture for the word.
- Ask her to tell you a sentence for her picture. You write her dictated sentence under the picture ("This is my dad."). This values her ideas and models writing.
- Wrap-up: Author's Chair & Celebration (3 mins)
- Treat this as a special book launch! Have her sit in a special "author's chair" and read her new book aloud to you or another family member.
- Give her lots of praise for her hard work all week. This powerful and creative conclusion solidifies her learning and builds confidence.
