Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to analyze and interpret a basketball-related reading passage, demonstrate comprehension through discussion, and apply critical thinking skills to answer comprehension questions.

Materials and Prep

  • Basketball-themed reading passage (can be a newspaper article, blog post, or any other relevant text)
  • Pen/pencil and paper for note-taking
  • Highlighters or colored pencils

Activities

  1. Warm-up discussion: Ask the student about their favorite basketball team or player. Encourage them to share their thoughts and opinions.
  2. Reading comprehension: Provide the student with the basketball-themed reading passage and ask them to read it silently. Encourage them to highlight or underline important information as they read.
  3. Discussion and analysis: Engage the student in a conversation about the reading passage. Ask them to share their thoughts on the main ideas, key details, and any interesting or surprising information they discovered.
  4. Critical thinking questions: Give the student a set of comprehension questions related to the reading passage. Encourage them to answer the questions using evidence from the text and their own analysis.
  5. Wrap-up activity: Ask the student to write a short paragraph summarizing the main points of the reading passage and their personal thoughts or reflections on the topic.
