Lesson Plan: The Wonderful World of Kara!

Subject: Self-Concept and Personal Identity
Age Group: 3-Year-Old (Homeschool)
Focus: This lesson helps Kara explore her physical features, personal preferences, and unique qualities through creative, hands-on activities.

Materials Needed:

  • A child-safe mirror (handheld or wall-mounted)
  • Large sheet of paper or butcher paper (big enough for Kara to lie down on)
  • Crayons, washable markers, or washable paint
  • Construction paper in various colors
  • Child-safe scissors and a glue stick
  • Optional: Yarn for hair, buttons for eyes, camera/phone to take a photo

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, Kara will be able to:

  1. Identify and name her own key physical features (e.g., eyes, nose, mouth, hair).
  2. Verbally express at least two of her personal favorites (e.g., favorite color, favorite food).
  3. Create a piece of art that represents herself.

Lesson Activities

Part 1: Warm-Up - The Mirror Song (5 minutes)

Goal: To get Kara engaged and introduce the idea of looking closely at herself.

Instructions:

  1. Sit with Kara in front of a mirror.
  2. Sing the following song to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." Encourage her to point to her features along with you.

"Look, oh look, what do I see?
I see Kara looking at me.
With her [color] eyes so bright,
And her smile, a happy sight.
Look, oh look, what do I see?
A very special person, that is ME!"

Teacher Tip: Repeat the song, changing the feature each time (e.g., "With her nose right in the middle," "With her [color] hair that's soft"). Make silly faces in the mirror together to keep it fun.

Part 2: Main Activity - My Body Map (15-20 minutes)

Goal: To create a life-sized representation of herself and connect her physical body to her identity.

Instructions:

  1. Roll out the large sheet of butcher paper on the floor.
  2. Ask Kara to lie down on the paper.
  3. Use a marker or crayon to trace the outline of her entire body. This is often a very giggly and fun experience!
  4. Once the outline is done, have her stand up and look at the shape. Say, "Look! This is the shape of you!"
  5. Now, let's decorate! Ask questions to guide her creativity:
    • "What color are your eyes? Let's draw them inside the head."
    • "What color is your hair? Should we use crayons or glue on some yarn?"
    • "What are you wearing today? Let's draw your shirt and pants on the map."
    • "What is your favorite color? Let's use that color to decorate your shirt!"

Differentiation: If Kara is not yet interested in drawing features, you can have pre-cut shapes for eyes, a nose, and a mouth that she can glue on. For a more advanced challenge, encourage her to draw fingers and toes.

Part 3: Creative Expression - My Favorites Collage (10 minutes)

Goal: To help Kara understand that her identity includes her likes and dislikes.

Instructions:

  1. Take the "My Body Map" or a new sheet of paper.
  2. Ask Kara questions about her favorite things. As she answers, help her draw them or find pictures to glue around her body map.
  3. Conversation Starters:
    • "What is your favorite food to eat? Let's draw a picture of a yummy strawberry!"
    • "What is your favorite toy? Let's draw your teddy bear in your hand."
    • "What do you love to do? Do you love to run? Let's draw zig-zag running lines around your feet!"
  4. This activity reinforces that her preferences are a wonderful part of who she is.

Part 4: Wrap-Up & Assessment - The "Me" Museum (5 minutes)

Goal: To celebrate her work and review the concepts of the lesson.

Instructions:

  1. Hang Kara's completed "My Body Map" on a wall at her eye level.
  2. Declare that you are now opening the "Kara Museum." Walk over to her artwork together.
  3. Ask her to be the tour guide. "Can you show me your eyes on your picture? Wow! And what is this you drew? Oh, your favorite banana! You are an amazing artist who made a picture all about you!"
  4. Informal Assessment: Observe her ability to point to the features she drew and recall the "favorites" she added. Her engagement and pride in her work are the primary measures of success.
  5. Give her a big hug and tell her how special and unique she is. Take a photo of her standing proudly next to her self-portrait.

Alignment with Early Childhood Development

  • Social-Emotional Development: Fosters self-awareness, identity formation, and positive self-esteem.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Practiced through drawing, coloring, and gluing.
  • Gross Motor Skills: Engaged while lying still for the body tracing.
  • Language Development: Encourages vocabulary for body parts and expressing preferences.
  • Cognitive Development: Connects abstract concepts (likes, identity) with concrete representations (drawings).
