Materials Needed:

  • A "Dog Man" book (any from the series)
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Blank paper or a small whiteboard for modeling
  • Printed "Supa-Brainstorm" word list (provided below)
  • Printed blank word search grid (10x10 or 12x12 is a good size)
  • Colored pencils or crayons (optional, for decorating)

Lesson Details

  • Subject: English Language Arts (Spelling, Vocabulary, Writing)
  • Grade Level: 1st Grade (Age 6-7)
  • Time Allotment: 30-40 minutes
  • Lesson Focus: This lesson moves beyond simple recognition and asks the student to apply spelling knowledge and organizational skills to create their own puzzle. The focus is on creativity, planning, and attention to detail.

1. Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Brainstorm and select at least 5-7 vocabulary words related to a familiar topic.
  • Correctly spell the selected first-grade level words.
  • Plan and write words horizontally and vertically within a grid.
  • Create a complete, solvable word search puzzle for someone else to enjoy.

2. Alignment with Standards

This lesson aligns with Common Core ELA Standards for Grade 1, including:

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.2.D: Use conventional spelling for words with common spelling patterns and for frequently occurring irregular words.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.2.E: Spell untaught words phonetically, drawing on phonemic awareness and spelling conventions.

3. Instructional Steps & Activities

Part 1: The "Supa-Fan" Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  1. Hook: Grab your favorite "Dog Man" book! Spend a few minutes looking at the pictures and the names of the characters.
  2. Discuss: Ask fun questions like, "Who is your favorite character and why?", "What makes Dog Man so silly?", "Who is the main villain in this book?".
  3. Introduce the Mission: Say, "Today, you're not just going to be a reader, you're going to be a Puzzle Master! You are going to create your very own, top-secret, supa-epic Dog Man word search for someone else to solve!"

Part 2: Puzzle Master Training (10 minutes)

  1. Brainstorm Words: Using the printed "Supa-Brainstorm" list, have the student choose 5-7 words they want to hide in their puzzle. Encourage them to read the words aloud. Let them add one or two of their own ideas if they feel inspired!
  2. Model the Technique: On a whiteboard or separate piece of paper, show the student how to make a mini word search.
    • Draw a small 5x5 grid.
    • Take a simple word like "DOG" or "COP". Write it clearly in the grid, either across or down.
    • Say, "First, we place our secret words. This is the most important step!"
    • Then, show how you fill in all the empty boxes with random letters. Emphasize that these letters are just for camouflage to hide the real word.

Part 3: Create Your Masterpiece! (15-20 minutes)

  1. Place the Secret Words: Give the student the blank grid and their pencil. Ask them to carefully write their chosen words into the grid. Encourage them to spread the words out. For now, stick to writing words forwards, either from left-to-right or top-to-bottom.
  2. Fill the Grid: Once all their secret words are placed, instruct the student to fill in every remaining empty square with a random letter of the alphabet. This is a great, low-pressure way to practice letter formation.
  3. Create the Word Bank: At the bottom or side of the grid, have the student neatly write a list of the words they hid. This is the "word bank" the other person will use to know what to look for.
  4. Decorate (Optional): If time permits, let the student decorate the border of their word search with drawings of Dog Man, Petey, Li'l Petey, or other characters.

Part 4: Challenge a Hero! (5 minutes)

  1. Review and Share: Ask the student to show you their finished puzzle. Celebrate their great work! Ask, "Which word was the trickiest to hide?" or "What was your favorite part of being a puzzle master?"
  2. The Challenge: The best part! Have the student give their word search to a parent, sibling, or friend to solve. Seeing someone else enjoy their creation provides a powerful sense of accomplishment.

4. Differentiation and Inclusivity

  • For Extra Support:
    • Focus only on the "Easy Peasy" words from the list.
    • Help the student write the words in the grid, or lightly pencil them in for the student to trace over.
    • Use a smaller 8x8 grid with only 3-4 words.
  • For an Extra Challenge:
    • Encourage the student to use words from the "Super Challenge" list or come up with their own.
    • Show the student how to hide words diagonally.
    • Challenge them to make a second, bigger puzzle with 10 or more words.

5. Assessment

  • Formative (During the lesson): Observe the student as they select words and place them in the grid. Are they spelling the words correctly from the list? Do they understand the concept of filling in the blank spaces? Offer guidance and prompts as needed.
  • Summative (The final product): The completed word search is the primary assessment.
    • Are there 5-7 hidden words spelled correctly?
    • Is the word bank accurate?
    • Is the puzzle solvable? (The ultimate test!)
