Kai's Grand Tour: Designing Your Own Nemours Estate

Materials Needed:

  • Computer or tablet with internet access (for virtual tour of Nemours Estate)
  • Plain white paper or a sketchbook
  • Graph paper (optional, for garden design)
  • Pencils, colored pencils, markers, or crayons
  • Building materials like LEGOs, Magna-Tiles, or wooden blocks
  • A ruler
  • Kai's imagination!

Lesson Plan

1. Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, Kai will be able to:

  • Apply concepts of symmetry and pattern by designing a formal garden inspired by the Nemours gardens.
  • Create a blueprint for a unique, special-purpose room that could be added to a grand mansion.
  • Design a custom feature for a vintage-style automobile, combining creativity with practical thinking.
  • Communicate his design choices and explain the purpose behind his creations.

2. The Grand Welcome (5-10 minutes)

  • Teacher's Action: Start by asking Kai what he already knows or finds most interesting about Nemours Estate. "Kai, I know you're excited about Nemours. What makes it so special to you? Is it the huge house, the amazing gardens, or the old cars?"
  • Student's Action: Kai shares his thoughts and interests.
  • Teacher's Action: Say, "That's fantastic! Today, we're not just going to learn about Nemours; you are going to become the chief designer and architect for your very own estate inspired by it. Let's start our tour!"

3. Activity Part 1: The Glorious Gardens (20 minutes)

  • Step 1: Virtual Exploration (5 mins)
    • Teacher's Action: Guide Kai through an online photo gallery or virtual tour of the Nemours Gardens. Focus on the Long Walk, the Maze Garden, and the fountains. Point out the shapes, patterns, and symmetry. "Look how the left side of this path is a mirror image of the right side. That's called symmetry. What shapes and patterns do you see?"
    • Student's Action: Kai observes the gardens, pointing out shapes and patterns he sees.
  • Step 2: Creative Design Challenge - The Symmetrical Garden (15 mins)
    • Teacher's Action: Give Kai paper (plain or graph) and drawing tools. Say, "Now it's your turn. You are the Head Gardener! Design your own formal garden. It must have at least one symmetrical path and a special, central feature like a fountain, a statue of your favorite animal, or even a secret maze."
    • Student's Action: Kai draws his garden design. He can use a ruler to help with straight lines and symmetry.
    • Differentiation:
      • For extra support: Fold the paper in half to create a clear line of symmetry. What Kai draws on one side, he can trace or copy to the other.
      • For an extra challenge: Ask Kai to create a key or legend for his map, showing what different symbols mean (e.g., a blue circle is a fountain, a green squiggle is a hedge).

4. Activity Part 2: The Magnificent Mansion (20 minutes)

  • Step 1: Virtual Exploration (5 mins)
    • Teacher's Action: Explore images or videos of the Nemours Mansion interior. Talk about how each room had a purpose (e.g., dining room, library, music room). Ask, "Alfred I. du Pont had rooms for many hobbies. If you were building a mansion, what kind of special room would you build for your favorite hobby?"
    • Student's Action: Kai observes the mansion rooms and brainstorms ideas for his own special room.
  • Step 2: Creative Design Challenge - Blueprint for a Dream Room (15 mins)
    • Teacher's Action: Say, "You are now the Chief Architect! The owner of the mansion (that's you!) wants a new, special room. It could be a LEGO building room, a video game command center, a slime-making laboratory, or an indoor parkour gym. Your job is to create a blueprint for it. Show where the furniture and important items will go from a 'bird's-eye view'."
    • Student's Action: Kai uses paper and drawing tools to draw a floor plan for his special room, labeling the key areas and items. Alternatively, he can build a 3D model of the room using LEGOs or blocks.
    • Teacher's Action: Ask follow-up questions to encourage detail. "What makes this the best slime-making lab in the world? What special features does your command center have?"

5. Activity Part 3: The Chauffeur's Garage (15 minutes)

  • Step 1: Virtual Exploration (5 mins)
    • Teacher's Action: Show Kai pictures of the classic cars in the Nemours collection. Talk about how cars back then were different from cars today. "These cars were the height of technology for their time. They had powerful engines, fancy lights, and special horns."
    • Student's Action: Kai looks at the vintage cars and notes their features.
  • Step 2: Creative Design Challenge - Invent a Feature (10 mins)
    • Teacher's Action: Say, "You are the Chief Engineer! Pick one of these car styles, or draw your own vintage-style car. Your job is to invent and add one brand new, amazing feature that no one had back then. It could be a snack-delivery system, an automatic dog-petting machine, or wings that pop out. Draw the car and your special invention."
    • Student's Action: Kai draws a car and adds his creative invention, ready to explain how it works.

6. Wrap-Up: The Estate Showcase (5 minutes)

  • Teacher's Action: Set up Kai's three creations: the garden design, the room blueprint/model, and the car invention. "Mr. Kai, thank you for inviting me to your magnificent estate. Could you please give me a tour of your designs and tell me about them?"
  • Student's Action: Kai presents his three designs, explaining his creative choices for each one. He explains why his garden is designed that way, what makes his room special, and how his car invention works.
  • Assessment: This final showcase serves as the assessment. The teacher listens for whether Kai can clearly communicate his ideas and if his designs meet the creative prompts from the lesson. The goal is to celebrate his creativity and application of the concepts.
