Lachlan's Great Bali Adventure Prep!

Materials Needed:

  • World map or globe
  • Computer or tablet with internet access
  • Paper (white and colored construction paper)
  • Drawing supplies (crayons, markers, colored pencils)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or tape
  • A small paper plate or square piece of cardboard
  • Natural items (if available): a few flowers, leaves, or blades of grass from the yard

Lesson Plan Details

Subject: Geography, Culture, and Life Skills (Travel Planning)
Student: Lachlan (Age 8)
Estimated Time: 60-75 minutes

1. Learning Objectives (Our Mission Goals)

By the end of this lesson, Lachlan will be able to:

  • Locate Indonesia and the island of Bali on a world map.
  • Say and understand at least three basic Indonesian phrases.
  • Describe one important Balinese cultural tradition.
  • Create a personalized, illustrated packing list for his trip.

2. Introduction: Bali Brainstorm! (10 minutes)

Goal: To spark curiosity and activate prior knowledge.

  1. Ask Lachlan: "When you hear the word 'Bali,' what do you picture in your head? What do you think we will see or do there?"
  2. Write down his ideas on a piece of paper (e.g., beaches, temples, monkeys, swimming).
  3. Watch a short, vibrant video about Bali (search for "Bali travel for kids" on YouTube). As you watch, point out things he mentioned and any new, interesting things you see.

3. Activity 1: Map Detective (15 minutes)

Goal: To understand where Bali is in the world.

  1. Lay out the world map or use a globe. Say, "Okay, Map Detective Lachlan, your first mission is to find where we are going! The country is called Indonesia."
  2. Give him hints if needed (e.g., "It's in Asia," "It's made of many, many islands," "It's near Australia.").
  3. Once he finds Indonesia, help him locate the specific, smaller island of Bali.
  4. Creative Task: Have Lachlan take a piece of paper and a blue marker. Ask him to draw your home country and then draw the island of Bali. Then, with a red marker, have him draw the "flight path" - a big swooping line from home to Bali. This helps visualize the distance.

4. Activity 2: Culture Explorer (20 minutes)

Goal: To learn about Balinese language and customs in a hands-on way.

  • Language Mission:

"Every great traveler learns a few words! Let's learn some magic words in Indonesian, the language spoken in Bali."

    • Hello: Halo (ha-low)
    • Thank you: Terima kasih (te-ree-ma ka-see)
    • Yes: Ya (yah)

Practice saying them together. Make it a game: you say the English word, and he says the Indonesian word.

  • Culture Craft - Making a Canang Sari:

"In Bali, people give beautiful, small offerings to say thank you. They are called canang sari and are made of leaves and flowers. Let's make our own practice version!"

    1. Take the small paper plate or cardboard square as a base.
    2. Use green paper to cut out a square or woven pattern to mimic the leaf basket. Glue it to the base.
    3. Use colored paper to cut out flower shapes, or use real flowers and leaves from the yard.
    4. Arrange the "flowers" on the base in a beautiful pattern. Explain that each color often has a special meaning.
    5. Place the finished craft somewhere special in the room as our own "offering of thanks" for our fun lesson.

5. Activity 3: Packing Pro (15 minutes)

Goal: To apply practical thinking and planning skills for the trip.

  1. Say, "Okay, we know where we're going and a little about the culture. Now, a pro traveler needs to know what to pack! Let's think about Bali. Is it hot or cold?" (Hot) "Will we be swimming?" (Yes!) "Will we be walking a lot?" (Probably!)
  2. Give Lachlan a large piece of paper. Have him fold it into sections or just draw different items he thinks he should pack.
  3. Encourage him to draw pictures of each item instead of just writing words. For example, he can draw a swimsuit, shorts, t-shirts, sun hat, sunglasses, sandals, and maybe one special toy or book to bring.
  4. This becomes his personal checklist to use when it's time to pack for real!

6. Wrap-Up & Review (5 minutes)

Goal: To reinforce what was learned.

  • Ask Lachlan to show you his "Packing Pro" list and explain why he chose each item.
  • Point to Bali on the map one last time.
  • Practice the Indonesian phrases again. End the lesson by saying, "Terima kasih, Lachlan!"

Differentiation and Enrichment

  • For extra support: Provide a pre-drawn template for the packing list with boxes he can fill in. Practice only one Indonesian phrase.
  • For an extra challenge: Have Lachlan research and draw one animal native to Bali (like a macaque monkey or a Bali Starling). He could also design a postcard that he will write and send from Bali, drawing a picture of a temple or beach on the front.
