  2. Recognize the Golden Eagle as the symbolic animal and the Dahlia as the symbolic flower of Mexico.
  3. Creatively construct a 3D representation (diorama) of Mexico including the three required symbols.
  4. Share 1-2 fun facts he learned about Mexican food or traditions.

Project Overview

This is a three-week creative journey to learn about the beautiful country of México! Arturo will explore its symbols, nature, and culture through fun, hands-on activities. The final goal is to build an amazing shoebox diorama that shows everything he has learned. Project Due Date: October 24.

Week 1: Welcome to México! - The Flag and First Impressions

Focus: Introduction to the country, its location, and its most important symbol—the flag.

Activity 1: Where in the World is México?

  • Instruction: Using a map or globe, show Arturo where you live. Then, trace a path with your finger to México. Talk about how it is a neighbor to the United States. Look at pictures of different landscapes in Mexico online—beaches, mountains, and cities.
  • Goal: To understand that México is a real place with diverse scenery.

Activity 2: Making the Flag

  • Instruction:
    1. Take a piece of white paper. Help Arturo divide it into three equal vertical sections.
    2. Color the left section green, leave the middle white, and color the right section red.
    3. Talk about the colors: Green is for hope, white is for unity (everyone together!), and red is for the heroes.
    4. In the center white section, help Arturo draw a simple picture of an eagle on a cactus. It doesn't have to be perfect! The goal is to remember the image.
  • Goal: To learn the flag's colors and central symbol through a hands-on craft. This flag can be saved for the shoebox.

Activity 3: Sound Safari!

  • Instruction: Listen to different kinds of music from México. Search for "Mexican folk music for kids" or "Mariachi music." Dance around and talk about how the music makes you feel. Does it sound happy? Fast or slow?
  • Goal: To experience Mexican culture through sound and movement.

Week 2: Nature's Wonders - Animals and Flowers

Focus: Exploring the symbolic animal and flower and starting to build the shoebox world.

Activity 1: The Powerful Golden Eagle

  • Instruction: Read the simple story of the Aztec legend: a god told the people to build their main city where they saw an eagle eating a snake on a cactus. Find a short, kid-friendly video of the story. Then, create your own eagle for the shoebox. You can use modeling clay, draw and cut one out, or even make one from a brown paper bag.
  • Goal: To learn the story behind the symbol on the flag and create the symbolic animal for the diorama.

Activity 2: Beautiful Dahlia Flowers

  • Instruction: Look at pictures of colorful dahlia flowers online. They are the national flower of Mexico! Create your own dahlias using colorful tissue paper. Simply stack a few small squares of tissue paper, pinch them in the middle, and fluff out the "petals." Make a few in different bright colors.
  • Goal: To identify the national flower and create a beautiful craft for the shoebox.

Activity 3: Building the Landscape

  • Instruction: Now it’s time to prepare the shoebox!
    • Paint or cover the inside of the box. Blue construction paper on the top half for the sky, and brown or green on the bottom half for the ground.
    • Use modeling clay or a small piece of green construction paper rolled into a tube to make a cactus (the nopal cactus). You can use a toothpick to gently poke "spines" in the clay.
  • Goal: To begin constructing the physical scene for the diorama, applying fine motor skills.

Week 3: A Celebration of Culture - Food and Fun!

Focus: Experiencing Mexican culture through food and traditions, and putting the final project together.

Activity 1: A Taste of México!

  • Instruction: Let's make simple guacamole! Give Arturo a ripe avocado (cut in half, pit removed) and a fork in a bowl. Let him have fun mashing it up. Squeeze in some lime juice and add a little salt. Enjoy it with some chips! Talk about other foods from Mexico, like tacos and corn (elote).
  • Goal: To connect with Mexican culture through the sensory experience of taste and smell.

Activity 2: Art and Traditions

  • Instruction: Explore the colorful folk art of México. Look up pictures of "Alebrijes"—fantastical creatures that are brightly painted. Talk about the amazing patterns and colors. If you have time, try drawing your own Alebrije!
  • Goal: To appreciate the vibrant creativity and heritage of Mexican art.

Activity 3: Final Assembly!

  • Instruction: It's time to put it all together! Guide Arturo as he places his creations inside the shoebox.
    • Glue the cactus to the floor of the box.
    • Place the golden eagle on top of the cactus.
    • Glue the mini flag to the back wall of the box.
    • "Plant" the beautiful dahlia flowers around the scene.
    • Add any other creative touches—maybe some pebbles for rocks or cotton balls for clouds!
  • Goal: To complete the creative project by combining all the elements learned over the three weeks.

Project Presentation - October 24

On the due date, have a special "Show and Tell." Ask Arturo to present his shoebox to the family. Encourage him to point to the different parts and share what he learned.

  • "Arturo, can you show me the flag of México?"
  • "What is that special bird called?"
  • "Tell me about the pretty flowers you made!"
  • "What was your favorite thing to learn about México?"
