Lesson Plan Overview

Student: Arturo (Age 5)

Subject(s): Social Studies, Art, Fine Motor Skills

Timeline: 3 Weeks

Project Due Date: October 24

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this three-week project, Arturo will be able to:

  • Identify the United States flag, the bald eagle as the national animal, and the rose as the national flower.
  • Create a 3D representation of these three symbols using various art materials.
  • Explore and represent one aspect of American culture (food, heritage, or tradition) in his project.
  • Develop fine motor skills through cutting, gluing, painting, and sculpting.
  • Present his completed shoebox diorama and explain what each element represents.

Week 1: Discovering Our National Symbols

Focus: Introduction to the project, the American Flag, and the Bald Eagle.

Day 1: Project Kick-off & The Flag

  • Introduction (10 mins): Show Arturo a map of the United States. Explain that we live here and we're going to create a special box to show all the cool things about our country. Introduce the shoebox as his "USA World."
  • Activity - Flag Exploration (20 mins): Look at a picture of the American flag together. Count the stripes. Talk about the colors red, white, and blue. Explain that the stars represent the states.
  • Craft Time - Make the Flag (30 mins):
    1. Take a small piece of white paper.
    2. Help Arturo glue on red strips of paper for the stripes.
    3. Have him color a blue square in the corner.
    4. Let him place star stickers on the blue square.
    5. Set the flag aside to dry. This will go inside his box later!

Day 2: The Bald Eagle

  • Story Time (15 mins): Read a simple picture book or watch a short, kid-friendly video about bald eagles. Talk about how they are strong, fly high, and are a symbol of the country.
  • Craft Time - Create the Eagle (35 mins):
    • Option 1 (Clay): Use brown clay for the body, white clay for the head and tail, and a small piece of yellow for the beak. This is great for sensory play!
    • Option 2 (Paper Roll): Use an empty toilet paper roll as the body. Let Arturo paint it brown. Once dry, help him glue on a cotton ball for the white head and draw on a beak and eyes with a marker.
  • Movement Break (5 mins): Flap your "wings" and pretend to be eagles soaring through the sky!

Week 2: Flowers, Food, and Fun!

Focus: The National Flower (Rose) and exploring American culture.

Day 3: The Beautiful Rose

  • Nature Exploration (20 mins): If possible, look at a real rose in a garden or at a store. Talk about its color, its soft petals, and its prickly stem. If not, look at beautiful, clear pictures online or in a book.
  • Craft Time - Tissue Paper Roses (30 mins):
    1. Cut circles out of red or pink tissue paper.
    2. Show Arturo how to pinch the center of a stack of circles and twist.
    3. Wrap a green pipe cleaner around the twisted base to make the stem.
    4. Fluff the tissue paper "petals" to make them look like a flower. Make one or two for the shoebox.

Day 4: Exploring Culture - Food & Traditions

  • Discussion (15 mins): Talk about some fun things in America. Brainstorm ideas together!
    • Food: Hamburgers, hot dogs, apple pie, pizza, popcorn.
    • Holidays/Traditions: Fireworks on the 4th of July, Thanksgiving dinner, baseball games.
    • Places: The Statue of Liberty, big mountains, wide rivers, sandy beaches.
  • Arturo's Choice! (5 mins): Let Arturo choose ONE of these ideas that he finds most exciting to add to his box.
  • Craft Time - Culture Element (30 mins): Based on his choice, create a representation.
    • If he chose food (e.g., apple pie): Use tan clay to make a little pie shape in a bottle cap.
    • If he chose a tradition (e.g., fireworks): Use black paper and glitter glue to make a small firework picture to hang in the box.
    • If he chose a place (e.g., a river): Use blue paint or a strip of blue paper for the bottom of the box.

Week 3: Building America!

Focus: Assembling the diorama and sharing the final project.

Day 5: Creating the Scene

  • Prepare the Shoebox (40 mins): This is the fun part where it all comes together!
    1. Ask Arturo, "What does the USA look like?" Guide him to think of the sky and the ground.
    2. Turn the shoebox on its side.
    3. Paint the inside back of the box light blue for the sky. He can add cotton ball clouds!
    4. Paint the bottom surface green for grass or brown/tan for earth. He could also glue down sand or small pebbles for texture.
    5. Let it dry completely.

Day 6: Assembly & Showcase

  • Final Assembly (25 mins):
    1. Now, place all the elements you've made inside the box.
    2. Glue the flag to the back wall.
    3. Stand the eagle up inside the box. A little dab of glue on the bottom will hold it.
    4. "Plant" the rose by sticking the pipe cleaner stem into a small piece of clay.
    5. Place his cultural element (the mini pie, firework picture, etc.) inside.
  • Project Showcase (15 mins): This is the celebration!
    • Set up the shoebox for display.
    • Ask Arturo to be the "tour guide" for his USA shoebox.
    • Ask him questions like, "Can you show me the flag?" and "Tell me about this animal!"
    • Praise his creativity and hard work. Take a picture of him with his amazing project!

Extensions & Adaptations

  • For Extra Challenge: Research a specific state and add something to represent it, like a tiny orange for Florida or a clay potato for Idaho. Add a famous landmark like the Statue of Liberty made from a small green-painted figurine.
  • For Extra Support: Use pre-printed templates for the flag and eagle that Arturo can color in. Focus on the sensory experience of gluing and placing items rather than creating them from scratch. Guide his hand gently when cutting if needed.

Project Assessment Checklist
