The Word Weaver's Workshop: A Parts of Speech & Homophone Adventure

Materials Needed

  • Paper (plain and/or lined)
  • Pencils, pens
  • Colored pencils or highlighters (at least 3 different colors)
  • A printed copy of the short story provided below ("The Mystery of the Missing Sandwich")
  • A list of homophone pairs (provided below)
  • Optional: A ruler for drawing comic strip panels

Lesson Goals for Nehemiah

By the end of this lesson, Nehemiah will be able to:

  • Correctly identify nouns, verbs, and adjectives within a short story.
  • Transform simple sentences into descriptive ones by adding powerful adjectives and verbs.
  • Demonstrate understanding of homophones by using them correctly in a creative comic strip.

Lesson Activities

Part 1: The Warm-Up - Sentence Supercharge! (5 minutes)

Start with a quick, fun game to get the brain working. Present Nehemiah with these three very boring sentences. Challenge him to make them as exciting and descriptive as possible in 60 seconds each. There are no wrong answers!

  • The dog ran.
  • The girl ate a cookie.
  • The sun set.

Teacher's Note: This activity naturally gets him thinking about adding descriptive words (adjectives) and action words (verbs) without needing to formally define them first. Celebrate his creativity!

Part 2: The Parts of Speech Detective (15 minutes)

Step 1: Quick Review (2 mins)

Briefly review the "job" of each part of speech:

  • NOUNS: Name a person, place, thing, or idea. (Examples: detective, kitchen, clue, mystery)
  • ADJECTIVES: Describe a noun. They answer questions like "What kind?" or "How many?". (Examples: sneaky, delicious, three, shiny)
  • VERBS: Show action or a state of being. (Examples: vanished, searched, was, is)

Step 2: The Mission (13 mins)

Give Nehemiah the printed story below, "The Mystery of the Missing Sandwich," and three different colored highlighters or pencils. His mission is to become a "Parts of Speech Detective."

His instructions:

  1. Read the story once for fun.
  2. Read it a second time, carefully.
  3. Use one color to highlight all the nouns he can find.
  4. Use a second color to highlight all the adjectives.
  5. Use a third color to highlight all the verbs.

The Mystery of the Missing Sandwich

The enormous sandwich sat on the clean plate. It was a beautiful creation. Thick bread held layers of juicy turkey, crisp lettuce, and two red tomatoes. Suddenly, a strange noise echoed through the quiet house. When the hungry boy returned to the kitchen, the plate was empty! A few tiny crumbs were the only clue. A sneaky dog with a guilty face hid under the small table. He happily licked his lips. The great mystery was solved.

Part 3: Homophone Hijinks - The Comic Strip Challenge! (25-30 minutes)

This is where Nehemiah gets to be creative and show what he knows.

Step 1: Explain the Concept (3 mins)

Explain that homophones are tricky words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings. Go over a few examples from the list below to make sure the concept is clear.

Step 2: The Creative Challenge (20-25 mins)

Nehemiah's task is to create a short comic strip (2-4 panels are perfect). The comic must:

  • Tell a simple story or a joke.
  • Correctly use at least one pair of homophones from the list.
  • The artwork and the dialogue/captions should work together to show the different meanings of the words.
  • Challenge: Try to include at least one interesting adjective and one strong verb in the comic!

Homophone Idea List:

  • there / their / they're
  • to / too / two
  • your / you're
  • its / it's
  • see / sea
  • ate / eight
  • sun / son
  • flour / flower
  • knight / night
  • right / write

Example Idea: A comic panel shows a queen pointing at a man in armor at nighttime. Caption: "The brave knight rode into the dark night."

Part 4: Wrap-Up - The Author's Showcase (5 minutes)

Let Nehemiah present his comic strip! Ask him to read it aloud and explain his homophone choice. This is a great time to celebrate his work and reinforce the learning.

Discuss the following:

  • What makes the comic funny or interesting?
  • Which homophone pair did you choose and why?
  • What was your favorite part of being a "Word Weaver" today?

Assessment of Understanding

  • Parts of Speech Detective: Check the color-coded story for general accuracy. It doesn't need to be 100% perfect, but it should show a solid understanding of the difference between nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
  • Homophone Comic Strip: This is the main assessment. Does the comic correctly use the chosen homophones? Do the words and pictures clearly show the different meanings? This demonstrates application, not just memorization.

Extension Activity (Optional Challenge)

If Nehemiah finishes early or wants an extra challenge, ask him to write a "silly scene" or a one-paragraph story. The rule is that the story must include:

  • The homophone pair: there, their, and they're
  • At least five interesting adjectives.
  • At least three strong, exciting verbs.
