Mushroom Marvels: A Fun-gi Adventure for Ilyanna

Materials Needed for the Week:

  • Reading: A non-fiction book about mushrooms (e.g., The Mushroom Fan Club by Elise Gravel or a National Geographic Kids book) and a mushroom field guide for your region.
  • Science & Art Supplies:
    • A "Mushroom Log" (a simple notebook or journal) and pencils/crayons.
    • Grocery store mushrooms (1-2 large portobellos and a few smaller cremini or shiitake).
    • Magnifying glass.
    • Paper (a few sheets of white and one sheet of black construction paper).
    • A large bowl or container.
    • Air-dry clay and paints.
    • Camera or phone for taking pictures (optional).
  • Kitchen Supplies (for Day 5): Ingredients for a simple mushroom recipe (e.g., pizza toppings, pasta sauce, or just butter/oil and garlic for sautéing).

Day 1: Meet the Mushroom

Today's Goal: To learn what a mushroom is and identify its basic parts.

  • Reading (15 min): Begin reading your non-fiction mushroom book together. Focus on the introduction: What is a fungus? How is it different from a plant? Introduce key vocabulary words like fungus, mycelium, cap, gills, and stem.
  • Science (25 min): Time for a mushroom dissection! Give Ilyanna a large portobello mushroom and a magnifying glass. Have her carefully observe and take it apart.
    • Can she find the cap? The stem?
    • Look closely at the dark lines under the cap. Those are the gills!
    • Talk about the hidden part you can't see: the mycelium, which is like the roots of the fungus, spreading underground.
  • Writing (15 min): Open the "Mushroom Log." On the first page, have Ilyanna draw the portobello mushroom and label its parts (cap, gills, stem). Below the drawing, ask her to write down two amazing facts she learned today.
  • Movement (5 min): Let's become a mushroom! Do a "Mushroom Growth" stretch.
    1. Start curled up in a tiny ball on the floor—you are a tiny spore underground.
    2. Slowly, stretch your arms and legs out in different directions along the floor—you are the mycelium network spreading out.
    3. Finally, slowly rise up, keeping your feet together (the stem) and spreading your arms out wide over your head to make a big mushroom cap!

Day 2: A Million Tiny Spores

Today's Goal: To understand how mushrooms reproduce using spores.

  • Reading (10 min): Continue your mushroom book, focusing on the chapter about spores and the mushroom life cycle.
  • Science (20 min + overnight wait): Let's make a spore print! This is a beautiful art project made by nature.
    1. Carefully remove the stem from a portobello mushroom.
    2. Place the mushroom cap with the gills facing down onto a piece of paper. For the best effect, place it so half is on white paper and half is on black paper.
    3. Cover the cap with a large bowl to keep out any breezes.
    4. Leave it undisturbed for at least 8-12 hours (or overnight). The magic is happening!
  • Writing (20 min): Time for a creative story! Ask Ilyanna to write a short story from the perspective of a single mushroom spore. What is its name? Where does the wind take it? What is it hoping to find so it can grow into a new mushroom?
  • Movement (10 min): "Spore Scramble!" Crumple up 15-20 small pieces of paper to be your "spores." Scatter them all over a room. Set a timer for one minute and challenge Ilyanna to race around and collect all the spores before the time runs out. Play a few rounds to see if she can beat her time!

Day 3: The Good, the Bad, and the Fungi

Today's Goal: To learn about the different jobs fungi have and the importance of mushroom safety.

  • Science (20 min): Reveal your spore print! Gently lift the mushroom cap. You should see a beautiful pattern left by the millions of tiny spores that dropped. Explain that this is how scientists identify different mushrooms. Then, go on a "Fungus Hunt" outside in your yard or a local park (important rule: LOOK but DO NOT TOUCH!). See if you can find any mushrooms, moss, or lichens. Take pictures or draw sketches in the Mushroom Log.
  • Reading (15 min): Read about the different roles of fungi. Some are "decomposers" that help break down old leaves and logs. Some are delicious food. And some are poisonous. Read about mushroom safety and establish the most important rule: We never, ever eat a mushroom we find in the wild.
  • Writing (20 min): Create a "Superhero Fungus" profile in the Mushroom Log. Ilyanna can choose a helpful fungus (like Penicillium, which gives us medicine, or a tasty Morel mushroom). She should draw it and write down its "superpowers" (e.g., "Power to decompose logs!" or "Power to make pizza delicious!").
  • Movement (5 min): Play "Decomposer Freeze Dance." Play some fun music. When the music plays, dance around. When the music stops, you have to "decompose" by slowly and creatively melting to the floor like a log turning back into soil.

Day 4: A World of Wonderful Weirdos

Today's Goal: To appreciate the incredible diversity of mushrooms and create our own!

  • Reading (15 min): Grab your field guide or look online at pictures of the world's strangest mushrooms. Find some amazing ones like the Lion's Mane, Turkey Tail, Bleeding Tooth Fungus, or the glowing Ghost Mushroom. Talk about their funny shapes and amazing colors.
  • Art/Science (30 min): Let's get creative with clay! Using the air-dry clay, Ilyanna will sculpt her very own mushroom. It can be a realistic model of one she saw in the guide or a completely fantastical mushroom from her imagination. Set it aside to dry.
  • Writing (15 min): While the clay is drying, have Ilyanna create a field guide entry for her new mushroom in her Mushroom Log. She should give it a scientific-sounding (or silly) name, draw what it looks like, and write a description. Where does it grow? Is it magical? What does it smell like?
  • Movement (10 min): "Mushroom Forest Obstacle Course." Build a course in your living room! Use pillows to be "fallen logs" to climb over, a line of tape to be a "narrow branch" to balance on, and a blanket-draped table to be a "dark cave" to crawl through, all while pretending to be a small forest creature exploring a world full of giant fungi.

Day 5: Mushroom Celebration!

Today's Goal: To celebrate our week of learning by tasting mushrooms and sharing what we've discovered.

  • Art (15 min): Your clay mushroom should be dry! It's time to paint it. Let Ilyanna use bright, fun colors to bring her creation to life.
  • Science & Life Skills (30 min): Time to cook! With your help and supervision, Ilyanna can help wash, slice (with a safe knife), and cook some store-bought mushrooms. You can sauté them with butter and garlic, add them to a pasta sauce, or use them as a pizza topping. Talk about how the heat changes their texture and smell. Enjoy your tasty mushroom snack!
  • Writing & Sharing (15 min): For the final entry in the Mushroom Log, ask Ilyanna to write or draw about her favorite activity from the week. Then, she can give you a "Mushroom Tour," presenting her labeled drawing, spore print, superhero fungus, and painted clay model, explaining what she learned each day.
  • Movement (5 min): End the week with a "Fungi Finale Dance Party!" Put on some high-energy music and call out different mushroom actions from the week: "Grow like a mushroom! Scatter like spores! Decompose! Navigate the obstacle course!" Celebrate a fantastic week of learning!
