Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Ninth grade homeschool student will be able to explore and experiment with perspex to create unique musical instruments or sound effects.
Materials and Prep
- Perspex sheets
- Scissors or craft knife
- Various objects for tapping or striking (e.g., pencils, spoons)
- Optional: Sandpaper for smoothing edges
No prior knowledge or skills are required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduction to Perspex: Begin by discussing what perspex is and its properties. Explain that perspex is a transparent plastic material that can be easily manipulated and shaped. Show examples of perspex sheets and discuss their potential uses in various fields.
- Brainstorming Musical Instruments: Engage the student in a brainstorming session to generate ideas for musical instruments or sound effects that can be created using perspex. Encourage creativity and imagination.
- Design and Construction: Once the student has chosen an instrument or sound effect to create, provide them with the necessary materials. Guide them in designing and constructing their perspex instrument, ensuring they understand the importance of considering size, shape, and the thickness of the perspex for producing desired sounds.
- Experiment and Play: After the instruments are completed, allow the student to experiment and play with their creations. Encourage them to explore different techniques and discover the range of sounds that can be produced by tapping, striking, or rubbing the perspex. They can also try modifying the perspex by cutting or shaping it differently to achieve different effects.
- Reflection and Presentation: Have the student reflect on their experience and the challenges they faced during the process. Ask them to share their instrument with others, either by performing a short piece or demonstrating the sound effects it can produce.
