Objective

Materials and Prep

  • A selection of minerals (rocks, crystals, etc.)
  • Magnifying glass
  • Pen and paper

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Minerals
  2. Show the selection of minerals to the student and explain that these are different types of minerals found in the Earth.

  3. Observation and Description
  4. Give the student a magnifying glass and ask them to choose one mineral to observe closely. Encourage them to describe what they see - the color, texture, shape, and any other unique features.

  5. Writing Activity
  6. Ask the student to write a short description of the mineral they observed. They should include details about its appearance and any interesting characteristics.

  7. Sharing and Discussion
  8. Have the student share their written description with you or a family member. Discuss the similarities and differences between the minerals they observed.
