Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to analyze and comprehend reading passages related to horses, and apply reading strategies to improve reading comprehension.

Materials and Prep

Activities

  • Activity 1: Pre-Reading Discussion
  • Engage in a discussion with the student about horses. Ask questions such as: What do you already know about horses? What kind of horse-related books have you read before? Encourage the student to share their experiences and knowledge.

  • Activity 2: Reading Comprehension
  • Provide the student with a reading passage about horses. Instruct them to read the passage carefully and underline any unfamiliar words. After reading, ask the student to summarize the main idea of the passage and answer comprehension questions related to the text.

  • Activity 3: Vocabulary Exploration
  • Choose a few challenging words from the reading passage and discuss their meanings with the student. Encourage them to use context clues to determine the meanings of the words. Have the student create flashcards with the words and their definitions to reinforce vocabulary retention.

  • Activity 4: Reflective Writing
  • Ask the student to write a short reflection about the reading passage. Prompt them to share their thoughts, opinions, or connections they made while reading. Encourage the student to use descriptive language and provide examples from the text to support their ideas.
