Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to solve horse-related problems.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Horse Treats
Ask the student to imagine they have a bag of horse treats. Each treat weighs 0.5 pounds. How many treats would they need to feed a horse that weighs 1000 pounds? Have the student solve this problem using division.
-
Activity 2: Horseback Riding Time
Tell the student that they are going horseback riding for 3 hours. Each hour, they ride at a speed of 8 miles per hour. How far will they have ridden by the end of the 3 hours? Have the student solve this problem using multiplication.
-
Activity 3: Jumping Heights
Provide the student with a list of different jumping heights for horses, such as 2 feet, 3 feet, and 4 feet. Ask the student to calculate the total height jumped if a horse jumps over 5 obstacles at each height. Have the student solve this problem using addition.
