Lesson Plan: My Super-Clean Body!

Materials Needed:

  • For Teeth Brushing: An empty cardboard egg carton (bottom half), a dry-erase marker, an old toothbrush, and a small amount of shaving cream or white puffy paint.
  • For Hair Brushing: A doll or stuffed animal with brushable hair (or a paper plate with yarn "hair" glued on), a child-safe comb or brush, and some hair clips or ribbons.
  • For Nail Cleaning: A piece of construction paper, a pencil/crayon for tracing, washable brown paint, a small bowl with a tiny bit of soapy water, and a nail brush or an old toothbrush.
  • For Wrap-Up (Optional): A picture book about getting clean or brushing teeth (e.g., "Pout-Pout Fish: The Clean-Up Crew" by Deborah Diesen or "Brush, Brush, Brush!" by Alicia Padron).

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the basic motion of brushing on a model of teeth.
  • Practice the motor skills of brushing hair on a doll or toy.
  • Participate in a hands-on activity that mimics cleaning dirt from under fingernails.
  • Verbally identify a toothbrush, hairbrush, and soap as tools for keeping our bodies clean and healthy.

Lesson Activities

Part 1: Warm-Up Song (5 Minutes)

Goal: To introduce the topic in a fun, musical way and get the body moving.

  1. Start by singing a familiar song like "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" to identify different body parts.
  2. Introduce a new hygiene-themed song to the tune of "This is the Way the Farmers Grow":
(Pretend to do the actions as you sing)
This is the way we brush our teeth, brush our teeth, brush our teeth.
This is the way we brush our teeth, to make them shiny and clean!

(Continue with other verses)
This is the way we comb our hair... to start our happy day!
This is the way we wash our hands... to scrub the germs away!

Part 2: The Super Smile Station (10 Minutes)

Goal: To practice teeth brushing in a creative, no-pressure way.

  1. Set-Up: Present the upside-down egg carton. Say, "Look at these big teeth! But oh no, they have some yucky sugar bugs on them!" Use the dry-erase marker to draw little dots or squiggles on the "teeth" (the bumps of the carton).
  2. The Activity: Hand your child the old toothbrush. Put a small dollop of "toothpaste" (shaving cream or puffy paint) on it.
  3. Guide and Play: Encourage your child to be a dentist! "Can you help me clean these teeth? Let's brush the sugar bugs away!" Guide them to use scrubbing motions—up and down, and back and forth. Celebrate how clean and sparkly the teeth are when they're done.

Part 3: The Fancy Hair & Nail Salon (10 Minutes)

Goal: To practice fine motor skills related to hair and nail care through imaginative play.

Hair Stylist Fun:

  1. Bring out the doll or paper plate with yarn hair. Say, "Teddy's hair is so messy! He needs a great hairstylist to help him. Can you be the hairstylist?"
  2. Provide the brush, comb, and clips. Let your child explore brushing and styling the doll’s hair. This is excellent for fine motor control and creativity. Don't worry about the final look; focus on the process of holding the tool and making brushing motions.

"Dirty Nails" Art & Clean-Up:

  1. Trace your child's hand on the piece of construction paper. Draw fingernails on the fingertips.
  2. Say, "Oh my, this hand was playing in the mud! Look at all that dirt under the nails." Let your child dip their finger in the brown paint and dab "dirt" onto the fingernails of the handprint.
  3. Time to Clean! Give your child the nail brush (or old toothbrush) and the small bowl of soapy water. Encourage them to "scrub, scrub, scrub" the brown paint off the paper handprint. It will be a fun, messy, and sensory way to show how we get dirt out from under our nails.

Part 4: Cool-Down & Story Time (5 Minutes)

Goal: To calmly review the concepts and connect them to real-life routines.

  1. Snuggle up and read a picture book about hygiene or taking care of our bodies.
  2. As you read, point out the tools you used today. "Look, that character is using a toothbrush, just like you did at our Super Smile Station!"
  3. Give lots of positive praise: "You did such a wonderful job helping keep everyone clean and healthy today! You were a great dentist and a super hairstylist."

Differentiation & Extension

  • For Added Support: If fine motor skills are a challenge, use your hand over your child's to guide the brushing motions. You can also focus on just one activity (e.g., only teeth) if three is too much for one session.
  • For an Extra Challenge: Create simple picture cards showing the steps (put toothpaste on brush, brush top teeth, brush bottom teeth) and have your child put them in order before starting the activity. You can also talk more about *why* we do these things—to stay healthy and strong.
