Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic skills to create and manage a store budget.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- Calculator (optional)
- Access to a computer or smartphone for online research (optional)
- Prior knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
Activities
-
Activity 1: Create a Store Budget
Ask the student to imagine opening their own store. They should come up with a store concept (e.g., clothing store, toy store, bakery) and determine the initial budget they have for purchasing inventory and covering expenses.
Have the student list the different categories of expenses they need to consider (e.g., rent, utilities, salaries, inventory, marketing).
Using their budget, ask the student to allocate funds to each expense category, making sure the total budget is not exceeded.
-
Activity 2: Calculate Profits and Losses
Once the student has determined their budget and allocated funds to different expenses, ask them to estimate the prices of the products they plan to sell and the quantities they expect to sell.
Using this information, have the student calculate the projected revenue and subtract the total expenses to determine the profit or loss they can expect from their store.
