Lesson Plan: The Great Conker Champion Challenge!

Subject Focus: Science (Botany, Physics), Art & Design, Engineering, Language Arts

Target Students: Daniella & Alisia (Ages 10)

Lesson Goal: To move beyond the traditional game of conkers by using creativity, basic engineering principles, and storytelling to design, build, and celebrate a "Conker Champion." This is a project-based lesson focused on hands-on application.

Materials Needed

  • For Conker Exploration:
    • Several conkers (horse chestnuts), some still in their spiky green cases if possible
    • A magnifying glass
    • Paper and pencils/colored pencils for drawing
    • Access to a book or website about trees (optional, for identification)
  • For Building the Champions:
    • The best, strongest-looking conkers Daniella and Alisia can find
    • A tool to make a hole through the conkers (e.g., a hand drill, a gimlet, or a sturdy metal skewer - Adult supervision required for this step)
    • Strong string or shoelaces (approx. 30-40 cm per champion)
    • A large collection of craft supplies: googly eyes, pipe cleaners, felt scraps, glitter, permanent markers, yarn for hair, small beads, hot glue gun (with adult supervision), craft glue, etc.
  • For the Conker Olympics:
    • A sturdy bucket or bin
    • A measuring tape
    • A ramp (can be a piece of cardboard, a plank of wood, or a large book)
  • For the Creative Writing Extension:
    • Paper and pens/pencils
    • Optional: Comic strip templates (can be pre-printed or drawn)

Lesson Procedure

Part 1: The Hook & Conker Investigation (15 minutes)

Objective: To spark curiosity and make careful observations about the natural object.

  1. Introduction: Begin by asking, "We all know the game of conkers, but have you ever thought about what makes a winning conker? What makes it so tough? Today, you aren't just going to play conkers; you are going to become engineers and storytellers. You will each create the ultimate Conker Champion!"
  2. Scientific Observation: Give Daniella and Alisia a few conkers (and a case, if you have one). Ask them to use the magnifying glass to investigate.
    • Prompting questions: "What do you notice about the shell? Is it smooth or bumpy? What does the 'eye' of the conker look like? How does the green case protect it? What do you think is inside?"
    • Ask them to draw a scientific diagram of their conker in their notebook, labeling the parts they can identify (shell, 'eye', case).

Part 2: Design & Create Your Conker Champion (30-40 minutes)

Objective: To use design thinking and creativity to build a unique character from a natural object.

  1. Brainstorming: Tell them their champion needs a name, a personality, and a special look. Have them spend 5 minutes sketching a design for their champion. Will it be a warrior? An athlete? A superhero? What features will it have?
  2. Construction Prep (Adult-Led): Carefully help each student select their "champion" conker. As the adult, you should be the one to carefully create the hole through the center of the conker using your chosen tool.
  3. Assembly: The students thread their string through the hole and tie a large, secure knot at the bottom so the conker can't slip off. They should tie a loop at the other end for holding.
  4. Creative Decoration: This is the core creative part! Set out all the craft supplies and let them bring their sketched designs to life. Encourage them to think about how their decorations might help in the "Olympics." (e.g., "Maybe this yarn hair will help it balance!").

Part 3: The Conker Olympics (20 minutes)

Objective: To apply basic physics concepts (gravity, force, accuracy) in a fun, hands-on way.

Instead of just smashing the conkers, hold a series of "Olympic" events to test their champions' skills.

  1. Event 1: The Pendulum Precision Test.
    • Setup: Place a small target on the floor (like a bottle cap or a small toy).
    • Task: Each student holds their string and tries to swing their champion like a pendulum to knock over the target. This tests their aim and control. Give them 3 tries each.
  2. Event 2: The Ramp of Courage.
    • Setup: Prop up a ramp.
    • Task: Students release their conker champion from the top of the ramp. Use the measuring tape to see whose champion rolls the farthest. This explores momentum and friction.
  3. Event 3: The Durability Drop.
    • Setup: Hold the sturdy bucket or bin.
    • Task: Students stand on a low, safe stool or chair and drop their champion into the bucket. This is a gentle way to test durability without immediate destruction. After the drop, they inspect their champion for any damage to the decorations or the conker itself.
  4. (Optional) Final Event: The Classic Clash! If the students agree and are willing to risk their creations, you can have one round of the traditional conkers game to declare a final winner.

Part 4: The Legend of the Champion (15-20 minutes)

Objective: To develop creative writing skills by building a narrative around their creation.

  1. Writing Prompt: Say, "Every champion has a story. Now it's time to write the legend of your conker."
  2. Task: Give Daniella and Alisia the choice to either:
    • Write a short story: An origin story about how their champion became so strong and brave.
    • Create a comic strip: A one-page comic showing their champion's biggest victory in the Conker Olympics.
  3. Encourage them to include their champion's name and personality in the story.

Wrap-up and Assessment

Discussion (5 minutes):

  • Have Daniella and Alisia share their stories or comics with each other.
  • Ask reflection questions: "What was the most challenging part of building your champion? If you were to do it again, what would you do differently? Which Olympic event was your champion's best, and why do you think that is?"

Assessment is based on participation and completion:

  • Did they actively participate in the observation and building stages?
  • Is the final Conker Champion a unique, creative expression of their ideas?
  • Did they engage thoughtfully in the "Olympics" and the storytelling task?
  • The "assessment" is the final product: the decorated champion and its accompanying story.

Differentiation and Extension

  • For Extra Support: If a student struggles with the fine motor skills of decorating, focus on larger additions like pipe-cleaner arms and legs. For writing, provide sentence starters ("My champion, [Name], comes from...") or focus on the comic strip, which is more visual.
  • For an Extra Challenge: Research the "science" of conkers. Investigate the disputed claims that soaking conkers in vinegar or baking them makes them harder. With permission, they could prepare a second conker using one of these methods and compare its performance in the durability test. They could also design and build a small arena or victory stand for their champions.
