  • One blue paper cup
  • One small wooden peg or clothespin
  • A small piece of felt or fabric (for Jonah's clothes)

  • Googly eyes
  • Markers or crayons
  • Scissors (for adult use)
  • Glue or tape
  • A large blue blanket or sheet

Lesson Plan Details

1. Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, Russell will be able to:

  • Verbally recall one or two key events from the story of Jonah (e.g., "Jonah was in the fish's tummy," "The fish spit Jonah out").
  • Demonstrate understanding of the story's sequence through play and craft.
  • Practice fine motor skills by decorating the craft and manipulating the puppet.
  • Connect the story to the simple concept of listening and making good choices.

2. Lesson Activities & Sequence

Part 1: The Wiggle & Wonder Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Hook: Start by asking, "Russell, what's the biggest animal you can think of in the whole ocean?" After he answers, say, "Today we are going to learn about a man named Jonah who met a VERY big fish!"
  2. Song: Sing a simple, fun song about the ocean to get moving. A great one is "Slippery Fish" (or "Baby Shark" works well too!). This gets him engaged and ready to learn.

Part 2: Interactive Story Time (10 minutes)

  1. Tell the Story: Read the story of Jonah from a children's book or tell it in your own simple words. Use lots of expression!
    • When Jonah runs away, get up and pretend to run in place.
    • When the storm comes, make whooshing wind and rain sounds together.
    • When Jonah is in the fish, cup your hands together to show him being inside.
  2. Engage with Questions: Pause as you tell the story to ask simple questions like, "What do you think will happen next?" or "Was that a good choice for Jonah to make?"

Part 3: Craft Activity - Jonah in the Belly of the Fish (15 minutes)

This craft creates a fun toy he can use to retell the story himself.

  1. Create Jonah: Take the wooden peg or clothespin. Help Russell draw a simple face on it with a marker. Wrap the small piece of felt around the "body" for clothes and secure it with a dot of glue. This is Jonah!
  2. Create the Big Fish: Give Russell the blue paper cup. Let him color it and stick on two googly eyes. This is the big fish!
  3. Put it Together:
    • An adult should carefully poke a small hole in the bottom of the cup.
    • Tie one end of the string around Jonah.
    • Thread the other end of the string through the hole in the cup, from the inside out.
    • Now, Russell can hold the cup and pull the string to make Jonah "hide" inside the fish's belly and then pop out!

Part 4: Movement Game - The Big Fish Chase! (5-10 minutes)

  1. Set the Scene: Spread the large blue blanket on the floor. "This is the big, big ocean!"
  2. Act it Out:
    • Say, "Oh no, Jonah is running away from God! Let's be Jonah!" Have Russell run around the edge of the blanket.
    • "A big storm is coming!" You can be the storm, making wind noises and gently swaying.
    • "Jonah is in the water!" Have Russell jump onto the "ocean" blanket.
    • "Here comes the big fish!" Gently scoop up the edges of the blanket and wrap it around him for a few seconds to be the "belly of the fish." Make it a fun and gentle hug.
    • "And the fish spit him out on the land!" Gently unwrap him so he can crawl onto the "dry land" (the floor).

3. Closing & Assessment (5 minutes)

  1. Review with the Craft: Sit down with the "Jonah in the Fish" craft you made. Ask Russell to show you what happened in the story using his toy.
  2. Simple Chat: Ask gentle, guiding questions:
    • "Where did Jonah go when he was in the water?"
    • "What did Jonah do inside the fish's tummy?" (He talked to God!)
    • "God gave Jonah a second chance to listen. It's always important to listen, isn't it?"
  3. Praise: Praise him for his wonderful listening, great craft-making, and for learning the story so well!

4. Differentiation & Notes for the Teacher (You!)

  • For Fine Motor Skills: If Russell struggles with drawing a face, offer to do it for him or use a pre-made sticker. If he is skilled with scissors, you could have him cut out a paper tail to tape onto the cup.
  • For Attention: If his attention starts to wander during story time, switch immediately to the movement game to get his energy out, then return to the story or craft. The activities can be done in any order that works best for him.
  • The Message: For a 4-year-old, the key takeaway is not about divine wrath, but about listening and second chances. Keep the tone light, positive, and focused on God's love and forgiveness.
