Lesson Plan: Mia the Potion Master's Mosquito Repellent
Materials Needed:
- Small spray bottle (2-4 oz, glass or PET plastic)
- Distilled or boiled water (cooled)
- Witch hazel or rubbing alcohol (to help the oil and water mix)
- Measuring spoons (1/2 teaspoon, 1 tablespoon)
- Small funnel
- Essential Oils (Choose 2-3 from this list):
- Citronella
- Lemon Eucalyptus
- Lavender
- Peppermint
- Lemongrass
- Pictures or real leaves of the plants listed above (e.g., a lavender sprig, a peppermint leaf)
- Blank sticker label or a piece of paper and tape
- Colored pencils, markers, or crayons
- A small bowl for practice mixing (optional)
- Droppers for essential oils
- Safety goggles (for fun and safety!)
Lesson Plan: Step-by-Step
Part 1: The Mosquito Mystery (5-10 minutes)
Goal: To introduce the problem and spark curiosity.
- Start with a Story: "Mia, imagine you are a super explorer in a jungle. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, but then you hear a tiny sound... BZZZZZZ! A pesky mosquito is trying to ruin your adventure! What's the problem with mosquitoes?" (They bite, they're itchy, they're annoying).
- Introduce the Mission: "Today, your mission is to become a Potion Master! We are going to use the power of plants to create a secret formula—a special potion that tells those mosquitoes, 'Go away!'"
Part 2: Investigation: Secret Weapon Scents (10 minutes)
Goal: To learn which plants and scents repel mosquitoes.
- Scent Exploration: Lay out the pictures or real leaves of the plants. Open the essential oil bottles (adult helps). Let Mia carefully smell each one. Ask questions like: "What does this remind you of?" "Is it a strong smell or a soft smell?" "Does it smell sweet like candy or fresh like a lemon?"
- Connect the Scent to the Plant: Match each oil to its plant picture. Explain, "This strong, beautiful smell from the lavender plant is something we love, but mosquitoes hate it! It's like a force field that keeps them away. The same is true for citronella, peppermint, and lemon eucalyptus."
- Choose Your Power: "Potion Master Mia, you get to choose the secret ingredients for your potion. Pick the two or three scents you like the best to mix together for our repellent."
Part 3: The Potion Lab: Making the Repellent (15 minutes)
Goal: To safely follow a recipe and create the repellent spray.
Important Safety Note: An adult should handle the main liquids and supervise the essential oils. Mia can wear her safety goggles to be an official scientist!
- Set Up the Lab: Place the spray bottle in the center of your workspace. Use the funnel to avoid spills.
- Step 1 - The Base: Fill the spray bottle about halfway with distilled water.
- Step 2 - The Mixer: Fill the rest of the bottle with witch hazel, leaving a little room at the top for the oils and for shaking. The witch hazel helps the oil mix with the water instead of just floating on top.
- Step 3 - The Magic Drops: Now for the essential oils! Let's make a potion with about 15-20 total drops. Let Mia use the dropper to count the drops out loud as she adds her chosen oils. For example: "8 drops of Citronella... 1... 2... 3... and 7 drops of Lavender... 1... 2... 3..." This is great counting practice!
- Step 4 - Mix the Potion: Screw the spray top on tightly. Now, do the Potion Master Shake! Shake the bottle gently to mix everything together. Explain that she'll need to shake it each time before she uses it.
Part 4: Creative Corner: Design Your Label (10-15 minutes)
Goal: To foster creativity and reinforce the purpose of the spray.
- Name Your Potion: "Every great potion needs a cool name! What will you call your special mosquito repellent?" (Examples: "Mia's Bug-Be-Gone," "Mosquito Magic," "Forest Explorer Spray").
- Design the Label: Give Mia the sticker label or paper. She can write the name of her potion and draw pictures on it. Maybe draw the plants she used, or a picture of a mosquito flying away!
- Add a Warning: This is very important! Help her write a small warning on the label, like: "Don't spray in eyes!" or "For skin, not for food!" This teaches responsibility.
- Final Touch: Stick the beautiful, finished label onto the bottle.
Part 5: Wrap-Up & Safety First! (5 minutes)
Goal: To review how to use the repellent safely and celebrate the accomplishment.
- Show and Tell: Ask Mia to present her creation. "Tell me about your Mosquito Repellent. What did you name it? What oils did you use? And what is the most important safety rule?"
- How to Use It: Demonstrate how to use it safely. "We spray it on our arms and legs, but never on our face. If we want to put it near our face, an adult can spray it on their hands first and then gently rub it on."
- Celebrate: "Congratulations, Potion Master Mia! You used science, math, and art to solve a problem. Now you're ready for your next outdoor adventure!"
Extension Ideas (Optional)
- Research: With help, look up one more plant that repels bugs (like basil or rosemary).
- Nature Walk: Go on a walk and see if you can find any of the plants used in the repellent (like lavender or mint).
- Effectiveness Test: The next time you are outside, use the spray and observe if it seems to work. Talk about the results like a true scientist!
