Lesson Plan: A Sunny Yellow Day Adventure!

Subject: Art, Science, and Sensory Exploration

Grade Level: Kindergarten (Age 5)

Setting: Homeschool

Materials Needed

  • For the Yellow Discovery Basket: A basket or box, various yellow household items (e.g., a banana, a lemon, a yellow toy car, a yellow block, a yellow sock, a rubber duck, a yellow crayon, a sunflower if available).
  • For the Sunshine Collage: A piece of sturdy paper or cardboard (blue or white), child-safe scissors, glue stick, yellow collage materials (yellow construction paper, yellow yarn, yellow fabric scraps, yellow tissue paper, yellow buttons, yellow magazine cutouts, dry yellow pasta).
  • For the Lemonade Sensory Science: A large bowl or plastic bin, water, a few lemons, a juicer (optional, squeezing by hand is great fine-motor practice!), a spoon, a small amount of sugar, cups for tasting, ice cubes (optional).

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the color yellow in various objects and contexts.
  • Sort objects based on the color yellow.
  • Create a piece of artwork using primarily yellow materials, demonstrating fine motor skills (cutting, gluing).
  • Describe sensory experiences using vocabulary related to the color yellow (e.g., "sour" lemon, "bright" sun, "soft" yarn).

Alignment with Early Learning Standards

  • Science/Cognitive Development: Identifies and classifies objects by a single attribute (color). Explores materials using all five senses.
  • Fine Arts: Uses a variety of art materials to express ideas. Develops fine motor skills through art-making.
  • Mathematical Thinking: Practices sorting and grouping.
  • Language Development: Builds vocabulary by describing objects and experiences.

Lesson Procedure

Part 1: Introduction - The Yellow Discovery Basket (5-10 minutes)

  1. Engage: Present the covered "Yellow Discovery Basket" to the student. Build excitement by asking, "I have a basket full of sunshine and surprises! Can you guess what color all the surprises might be?"
  2. Explore: Allow the student to uncover the basket and explore the items inside one by one. As they pull out each item, ask questions like:
    • "What is this?"
    • "What color is it?"
    • "How does it feel? Is it soft, hard, smooth, or bumpy?"
  3. Sort: After exploring, place a few non-yellow items nearby. Ask the student to help you sort all the items into two piles: a "Yellow Pile" and a "Not Yellow Pile." This reinforces the concept of classification.

Part 2: Main Activity - Sunshine Collage Art (15-20 minutes)

  1. Connect: Say, "Yellow is such a happy, sunny color! Let's make our very own sunshine to brighten up the room."
  2. Create:
    • Give the student the sturdy paper. Have them draw a large circle in the middle for the sun.
    • Provide the tray of assorted yellow collage materials. Encourage them to explore the different textures.
    • Let the student practice their scissor skills by snipping yellow paper into strips or shapes for sunbeams. For younger learners or those struggling with scissors, tearing paper is an excellent alternative.
    • Instruct the student to glue the yellow materials inside the circle and as rays coming out of their sun. There is no wrong way to do this; focus on the creative process.
  3. Talk: While they work, talk about their choices. "Oh, you chose the soft yellow yarn for that sunbeam! This yellow paper feels so crinkly."

Part 3: Active Break - "I Spy a Yellow Surprise!" (5-10 minutes)

  1. Move: Announce it's time for a movement game. Explain the rules of "I Spy."
  2. Play: Start the game by saying, "I spy with my little eye... something YELLOW!" Have the student look around the room and run, hop, or skip to touch the yellow object you are thinking of.
  3. Switch Roles: Let the student take a turn being the "spy" so they can practice identifying and naming yellow items in their environment.

Part 4: Sensory Science - Let's Make Lemonade! (10-15 minutes)

  1. Investigate: Move to an area that can get a little wet. Present the lemons. Ask, "What color are these? How do they smell?" Cut one open for them to see the inside and smell the strong scent.
  2. Experiment:
    • Fill the large bowl with water. Let the student explore whether the lemons float or sink (whole lemons often float!).
    • Help the student cut the remaining lemons in half. Let them squeeze the juice into a cup or pitcher, using their hand muscles. This is a fantastic fine-motor workout.
    • Mix the lemon juice with some water and a little sugar. Let the student stir until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Taste: Pour a small amount into a cup for a taste test. Ask, "Is it sweet or sour? Is it warm or cold?" Relate the yellow color of the lemon to its sour taste.

Part 5: Wrap-up and Reflection (5 minutes)

  1. Review: Gather together and look at the sunshine collage. Ask the student to point to their favorite part.
  2. Share: Ask questions to reinforce the day's learning:
    • "What was your favorite yellow activity we did today?"
    • "Can you name three yellow things we saw or used?"
    • "Where else might we see the color yellow outside?" (Bees, flowers, school bus, etc.)
  3. Display: Hang their beautiful sunshine collage in a prominent place to celebrate their work.

Assessment (Informal Observation)

  • Observe the student's ability to correctly identify and point to yellow objects during the "I Spy" game and discovery basket activity.
  • Note the student's engagement and fine motor control while cutting, tearing, and gluing materials for the collage.
  • Listen for the student's use of color-related and sensory vocabulary (e.g., "yellow," "bright," "sour") during the activities.

Differentiation and Inclusivity

  • For Extra Support:
    • Pre-cut some of the collage materials to reduce frustration with scissors.
    • Focus more on the sensory exploration (touching, smelling) than on the creation of a perfect final product.
    • Guide the student's hand during squeezing or stirring if they need help with motor tasks.
  • For an Extra Challenge:
    • Introduce different shades of yellow (e.g., gold, mustard, pastel yellow) and see if the student can sort them.
    • Encourage the student to count how many yellow items they find during the "I Spy" game.
    • Practice writing the word "YELLOW" on their artwork with a yellow crayon or marker.
