Alphabet Adventure Day: My Amazing Name!

Materials Needed

  • A shallow bin or tray (a baking sheet works well)
  • A sensory base material (uncooked rice, oats, sand, or dried beans)
  • Magnetic letters or foam alphabet puzzle pieces
  • Large sheet of paper or construction paper
  • Child-safe glue or a glue stick
  • Art supplies for decorating (crayons, markers, stickers, glitter, pom-poms)
  • Alphabet books (e.g., Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault, or any simple A-Z book)
  • Post-it notes or index cards
  • A marker

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Recognize and identify at least one letter in their own name.
  • Demonstrate fine motor skills by manipulating letter objects and using art supplies.
  • Verbally connect a letter to its shape ("This one is round," "This one has straight lines").
  • Engage in a positive, play-based experience with letters, building print awareness.

Lesson Activities (The Adventure!)

1. Warm-Up: The Name Song (5 minutes)

Goal: To introduce the focus letters in a fun, musical way.

Instructions:

  1. Sing a personalized version of "B-I-N-G-O" using your child's name. For example, for a child named "LEO":
  2. "There is a friend that I know well, and Leo is his name-o! L-E-O! L-E-O! L-E-O! And Leo is his name-o!"
  3. As you sing the letters, point to them written largely on a piece of paper. Clap for each letter. Get excited! Repeat the song a few times, encouraging the child to clap or sing along.

2. Main Activity 1: Sensory Letter Dig (10-15 minutes)

Goal: To provide a tactile, hands-on experience with letter shapes.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the sensory bin by pouring your base material (rice, oats, etc.) into the tray.
  2. Hide the magnetic or foam letters that make up your child's name inside the sensory material. Add a few extra, different letters for variety.
  3. Invite your child to be an "Alphabet Archeologist!" Their job is to dig through the bin to find the "special treasure letters" from their name.
  4. As they find a letter, say its name and sound. "You found the L! L says 'llll'." Encourage them to feel the shape. Ask questions like, "Does this letter feel bumpy or smooth? Does it have a long line?"

3. Main Activity 2: Letter Scavenger Hunt (10 minutes)

Goal: To help the child see that letters are all around them in their environment.

Instructions:

  1. Using Post-it notes, write the letters of your child’s name (one letter per note) and stick them in obvious places around one room. For "LEO", stick an 'L' on a Lamp, an 'E' on the door for Exit, and an 'O' on a toy bOx.
  2. Give the child one of the letter objects from the sensory bin (e.g., the foam 'L'). Say, "Let's go on a hunt! Can you find the matching 'L' hiding in the room?"
  3. Help them search for and match their letter object to the Post-it note. Celebrate each find with a high-five or a happy dance!

4. Main Activity 3: "My Name" Masterpiece (10-15 minutes)

Goal: To practice letter recognition and placement while encouraging creativity and fine motor skills.

Instructions:

  1. On the large sheet of paper, lightly write your child's name in big, bubble letters.
  2. Place the letters they found in the sensory bin at the top of the paper for reference.
  3. Give them the glue stick and art supplies. Their mission is to decorate their name! They can glue pom-poms along the lines of the letters, fill them in with stickers, or color them with crayons.
  4. Talk about the letters as they work. "You are putting a shiny sticker right on the top of the 'O'. Your 'O' is so round!"

5. Cool-Down: Alphabet Story Time (5-10 minutes)

Goal: To wind down the lesson and reinforce letter exposure in a calm, enjoyable way.

Instructions:

  1. Cuddle up together with an alphabet book.
  2. As you read, point to the letters. When you get to a letter from your child's name, make it extra special. "Look! It's the letter 'E', just like in your name!"
  3. Let the child turn the pages and simply enjoy the story and pictures, ending the "adventure" on a quiet, positive note.

Differentiation (Adjusting the Adventure)

  • For Extra Support: Focus on only the first letter of the child's name for all activities. Use hand-over-hand guidance to help them trace the letter shape or apply glue. The goal is positive exposure, not perfection.
  • For an Extra Challenge: Hide all 26 letters in the sensory bin and have them find not only the letters in their name but other letters you call out. During the scavenger hunt, ask them to find objects that start with the letter's sound ("Can you find something else that starts with 'llll' like 'L'?'").

Assessment (Checking Our Map)

This assessment is informal and observational. During the lesson, look for:

  • Did the child show interest in finding the letters in the sensory bin?
  • Could the child successfully match a letter object to the written letter during the scavenger hunt (with or without help)?
  • Did the child attempt to place art materials along the lines of the letters in their name?
  • Did the child point to or verbally acknowledge a letter from their name during story time?
