Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the Lebanese flag and the cedar tree as a symbol of Lebanon.
  • Verbally repeat three simple Arabic words (Marhaba, Shukran, Arz).
  • Develop fine motor skills by tearing, gluing, and painting to create a 3D craft.
  • Participate in preparing a simple, culturally-inspired snack.
  • Engage in gross motor activity by trying a simple folk dance step.
  • Demonstrate understanding by pointing to Lebanon on a map and recalling one activity from the day.

Lesson Procedure

Part 1: Welcome to Lebanon! (Approx. 60 minutes)

  1. Arrival and "Travel" (15 mins):
    • Teacher/Parent: "Guess what? Today we are going on a special trip all the way to a country called Lebanon! Let's pack our bags!"
    • Engage in pretend play, having the child pack a small backpack with imaginary items (sunscreen, camera, etc.).
    • Use the globe or world map to find Lebanon. Point out its location on the Mediterranean Sea. Trace the "flight path" from your home to Lebanon with your finger.
  2. The Lebanese Flag (25 mins):
    • Show a picture of the Lebanese flag. "This is the flag of Lebanon! What colors do you see?" (Guide them to identify red and white).
    • Teacher/Parent: "And what's that in the middle? It's a beautiful green tree! This is a very special tree called a cedar tree, or 'Arz' in Arabic. It's very strong and important to the people of Lebanon."
    • Provide a flag printable or a blank piece of paper. Have the child color the top and bottom stripes red, leaving the middle white. Then, help them draw or color a green cedar tree in the center.
  3. Learning Our First Words (20 mins):
    • Introduce three simple, important Arabic words with actions.
    • Marhaba (mar-ha-ba) = Hello! (Practice with a friendly wave).
    • Shukran (shook-ran) = Thank you! (Practice by handing an object back and forth and saying "Shukran").
    • Arz (arz) = Cedar tree! (Point to the tree on the flag they just colored).
    • Repeat the words in a sing-song voice a few times to help with memorization.

Part 2: Let's Explore the Cedar Forest! (Approx. 60 minutes)

  1. Cedar Tree Craft (30 mins):
    • Teacher/Parent: "Now let's make our own 'Arz' tree, just like the one on the flag!"
    • Paint or color the toilet paper roll brown. This will be the tree trunk.
    • While it dries, have the child tear the green construction paper into small strips and pieces. Tearing paper is excellent for building hand strength.
    • Help the child glue the torn green paper onto a paper plate or a circular piece of cardboard to create the bushy, layered look of a cedar tree.
    • Once the trunk is dry, tape or glue it to the center of the paper plate base. Now you have a 3D cedar tree!
    • Differentiation: If the child finds tearing difficult, you can pre-cut strips for them to glue.
  2. Story Time in the Forest (15 mins):
    • Sit with your newly made cedar tree. Tell a simple story: "Imagine we are in a big forest in Lebanon. The cedar trees here are so old, they are like the grandparents of all the other trees. They stand very tall and strong, and their branches reach out like they want to give the whole forest a big hug. The air smells fresh and piney."
    • Watch a short (1-2 minute) kid-friendly video of the Cedars of God forest in Lebanon to provide a visual.
  3. Movement Break (15 mins):
    • Time to stretch and move! Pretend to be a strong cedar tree. Stand tall, stretch your arms out wide like branches, and sway gently in the wind.

--- SNACK & FREE PLAY BREAK (30 minutes) ---

Part 3: A Taste of Lebanon! (Approx. 45 minutes)

  1. Introduction to Lebanese Food (5 mins):
    • Teacher/Parent: "All that exploring made me hungry! In Lebanon, people love to eat fresh and healthy food. One famous dish is a salad called Tabbouleh, which has lots of fresh green herbs. We are going to make our own special 'Fruity Tabbouleh'!"
  2. Making "Fruity Tabbouleh" (25 mins):
    • Wash hands together.
    • Set out the bowls of pre-chopped fruit (strawberries, kiwi/grapes).
    • Give the child the mint leaves and show them how to tear them into small pieces with their fingers and add them to the bowl.
    • Let the child measure and pour the lemon juice and optional honey into the bowl.
    • The best part: let the child stir everything together gently. This is a fantastic sensory and practical life activity.
  3. Enjoying Our Creation (15 mins):
    • Serve the "Fruity Tabbouleh." As you eat, talk about the different flavors—sweet, a little sour.
    • Remember to say "Shukran" for the delicious and healthy snack you made together!

Part 4: A Lebanese Celebration! (Approx. 45 minutes)

  1. Let's Dance the Dabke! (20 mins):
    • Teacher/Parent: "In Lebanon, when people celebrate, they love to dance a fun dance called the Dabke. Let's try it!"
    • Play some upbeat Lebanese folk music.
    • Model a very simple Dabke step: hold hands (or just dance side-by-side), take two steps to the side, and do a little kick or stomp. (Right-step, right-step, kick! Left-step, left-step, kick!).
    • The goal is not perfection, but joyful movement. Laugh and have fun with it!
  2. "Trip" Review and Show & Tell (15 mins):
    • Gather all the things you made today: the flag coloring page and the cedar tree craft.
    • Ask simple review questions:
    • "Can you show me the country we visited on the map?"
    • "What is the special tree in Lebanon called?" (Arz)
    • "What was your favorite part of our trip to Lebanon today?"
    • This reinforces learning in a low-pressure, conversational way.
  3. Cool-Down and "Flying Home" (10 mins):
    • Play some calm, beautiful Lebanese instrumental music.
    • Teacher/Parent: "Our trip is over. It's time to pack our bags and fly home. Let's put our beautiful crafts and our memories in our suitcase."
    • End the lesson by saying the Arabic word for goodbye: Ma'a Salama (ma-a sa-la-ma).

Assessment

Assessment will be informal and observational. Look for:

  • Participation: Did the student actively engage in the craft, cooking, and dancing activities?
  • Comprehension: Can the student point to the cedar tree on their flag drawing? Can they attempt to say one of the Arabic words?
  • Motor Skills: Observe the child's ability to tear, glue, color, and stir during the activities.
  • Recall: Can the student name one thing they did during their "trip" to Lebanon? (e.g., "made a tree," "danced," "ate fruit salad").
