Lesson Activities
1. Warm-Up: A Trip to Paris! (5 minutes)
Goal: To create an exciting and immersive context for learning French.
- Set the Scene: Say, "Pragatiprakash05, today we are going on a magical trip to France! Let's find Paris on the map." (Use a globe or map if you have one). Play some quiet, cheerful French music in the background.
- First Word: "When we arrive in France, the first thing we need to know is how to say hello! The most important word is Bonjour (bon-zhoor). It means 'good day'. Let's practice. Can you give me a happy Bonjour? A sleepy Bonjour? A giant, loud Bonjour?"
2. Activity: Meet Pierre the Puppet! (10 minutes)
Goal: To practice greetings in a fun, interactive way.
- Introduce the Puppet: Bring out your hand puppet. "This is my friend, Pierre. He only speaks French! Let's say Bonjour to him."
- Practice Dialogues:
- Use Pierre to greet the student: "Bonjour, Pragatiprakash05!" Encourage a "Bonjour, Pierre!" in return.
- Teach Salut (sah-loo), which is a more casual "Hi." Have Pierre say "Salut!"
- Teach Au revoir (oh ruh-vwar), which means "Goodbye." Practice waving and saying "Au revoir, Pierre!"
- Role-Play Game: Let Pragatiprakash05 use the puppet. Now they are Pierre! You can greet them, and they have to respond as the French-speaking puppet. This reversal of roles builds confidence.
3. Activity: The Rainbow Color Hunt (15 minutes)
Goal: To learn French colors through movement and association.
- Introduce Colors: Show the colored flashcards or papers one by one, clearly pronouncing the French word. Have the student repeat after you.
- Rouge (roozh) - Red
- Bleu (bluh) - Blue
- Jaune (zhown) - Yellow
- Vert (vair) - Green
- Orange (o-rawnzh) - Orange
- Color Song: Sing a simple song to the tune of "Are You Sleeping?"
(Teacher sings) C'est du rouge, c'est du rouge.
(Student points to red) Oui, c'est ça. Oui, c'est ça.
(Together) J'aime la couleur rouge! J'aime la couleur rouge!
C'est super! C'est super!
(Repeat with other colors like bleu and jaune). - "Jacques a dit" (Simon Says): Play a quick game. Say "Jacques a dit... touchez quelque chose de rouge!" (Simon says... touch something red!). Continue for all the colors. This gets the student moving and connecting the words to real-world objects.
4. Creative Application: My French Masterpiece (15 minutes)
Goal: To combine all the new vocabulary in a creative and personal project.
- Teach Self-Introduction: "Now for the most important phrase! To say 'My name is...', you say Je m'appelle... (zhuh mah-pell). So I would say, 'Je m'appelle [Your Name]'. Can you say, 'Je m'appelle Pragatiprakash05'?" Practice this a few times until it feels natural.
- Art Project: Give the student the large piece of paper and coloring tools. "You are now a French artist! I want you to draw a picture of yourself or your favorite things. Your only mission is to use all the new colors we learned."
- Labeling: As they draw, help them label the colors on their picture. Next to a red apple, they can write "rouge." Next to a blue sky, they write "bleu."
- The Signature: At the very bottom of the artwork, have them sign their name with their new French introduction: "Je m'appelle Pragatiprakash05."
5. Wrap-Up: The Art Show! (5 minutes)
Goal: To review and celebrate what was learned.
- Presentation: Treat this like a real art gallery opening. Ask Pragatiprakash05 to present their masterpiece.
- The Speech: Guide them to start with "Bonjour! Je m'appelle Pragatiprakash05." Then, have them point to different parts of their drawing and say the color name in French. "C'est rouge. C'est bleu."
- Final Farewell: Applaud their wonderful presentation! To end the lesson, have everyone wave and say a big, happy "Au revoir!"
Assessment (Informal)
Observe during the lesson:
- Does the student participate enthusiastically in the games and songs?
- Can they respond with the correct greetings when prompted by you or the puppet?
- Are they able to point to the correct color during the "Jacques a dit" game?
- The final artwork will serve as a wonderful artifact of their learning, showcasing their ability to write their introduction and label the colors.
Notes for Differentiation
This is a one-on-one lesson, so it's easy to adapt!
- If it's too easy: Introduce more colors (violet, rose, noir, blanc) or the question "Comment t'appelles-tu?" (What is your name?).
- If it's challenging: Focus on just three main greetings (Bonjour, Au revoir) and three primary colors (rouge, bleu, jaune). The goal is fun and confidence, not memorization!
