Lesson: The Great Bird Journey!

Materials Needed:

  • 1 piece of rectangular paper (construction paper or printer paper)
  • Crayons or markers
  • A cozy blanket or pillow to represent the “warm south”

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this 15-minute lesson, your child will be able to:

  1. Explain in their own words that birds fly south because it gets cold and food is harder to find.
  2. Demonstrate the concept of migration by flying a handmade “bird” from a “cold” place to a “warm” place.

Lesson Activities & Instructions:

Part 1: The Shiver and the Story (3 minutes)

Goal: To introduce the concept of "cold" vs. "warm" and connect it to birds.

  1. Engage with a question: Start by saying, “Brrr! Let’s pretend it’s getting very, very cold outside. What do we do when we get cold?” (Listen for answers like put on a coat, get a blanket, go inside.) “That’s right! We find ways to get warm.”
  2. Tell a tiny story: Continue with, “Well, some birds can’t put on a coat! When they feel the cold air and see the leaves falling, they know winter is coming. The yummy bugs and berries they eat get harder to find. So, they go on a big trip, a special journey called migration. They fly to a place that is warm and has lots of food. They fly south!”

Part 2: Let's Make a Migrating Bird! (7 minutes)

Goal: To create a physical object for a hands-on demonstration.

  1. Decorate: Give your child the piece of paper and crayons. Say, “Let’s make our own bird that needs to fly south for the winter! You can give it colorful feathers, a beak, and eyes.” Let them draw and color their bird design freely on the paper.
  2. Fold: Help your child fold the decorated paper into a simple paper airplane. As you fold, say things like, “We need to give our bird strong wings for its long journey!” This is now your “Migrating Bird.”

Part 3: Time to Fly South! (5 minutes)

Goal: To apply the concept of migration through active play.

  1. Set the Scene: Find a spot in the room and call it the “cold north.” Place the cozy blanket or pillow across the room and call it the “warm, sunny south.”
  2. The Journey Begins: Stand in the “cold north” with your child and their paper airplane bird. Ask, “Oh no, our bird is getting cold and hungry! Where does it need to fly?” (Guide them to say “south!” or “to the warm place!”)
  3. Fly!: Let your child fly their paper airplane from the “north” to the “south.” Encourage them to make a few trips back and forth, celebrating each time the bird lands safely on the warm blanket. You can make bird sounds together as it flies.
  4. Check for Understanding: While their bird is resting in the “south,” ask a simple wrap-up question: “Why did our little bird fly all the way over here to the blanket?” (Listen for answers like “because it was cold,” “to get warm,” or “to find food.”)

Differentiation & Inclusivity:

  • For Extra Support: If folding the airplane is tricky, you can have a pre-folded one ready. The focus is on the concept of flying from cold to warm, not perfect folding. You can also "fly" the bird together.
  • For an Extra Challenge: Add an "obstacle" between the north and south (like a chair to fly over, representing a mountain) and talk about how the journey can be hard for birds.
