Lesson Details
Subject: Early Science / Creative Arts
Age Group: 4 Years Old
Time Allotment: 15 Minutes
1. Learning Objective
The student will demonstrate a basic understanding of bird migration by creating a bird puppet and using it to "fly" from a designated "cold" area to a "warm" area during a movement activity.
2. Introduction & Story (3 minutes)
Instruction: Sit with the student in a cozy spot.
Script: "Have you noticed it's getting a little colder outside? Brrr! When the weather gets cold and the leaves fall, it's hard for some birds to find yummy bugs and berries to eat. So, what do they do? They take a big trip! They fly all together to a place that is warm and has lots of food. This big trip is called migration. They fly south for the winter!"
Engagement: Use your hands to make a flying bird motion. Encourage the child to copy you. "Can you fly like a bird going south?"
3. Activity 1: Create a Migrating Bird Puppet (7 minutes)
Instruction: Move to a table with the craft supplies ready.
Script: "Let's make our very own bird that is ready to migrate south!"
- Fold & Color: Fold the paper plate in half. This will be the bird's body and wings. Have the child color the outside of the folded plate. "What color is our bird going to be?"
- Add Feathers: Help the child glue or tape a few craft feathers onto the back half of the plate for the tail.
- Add the Head: Add a googly eye (or draw one) on the front. Draw a small triangle for a beak.
- Attach the Handle: Tape the popsicle stick to the inside bottom of the folded plate so the child can hold it like a puppet.
Differentiation: For a child who needs more support, have the plate pre-folded. For a child seeking a challenge, encourage them to add more details like patterns on the wings.
4. Activity 2: Let's Migrate! (4 minutes)
Instruction: Have the child hold their new bird puppet. Designate one side of the room as the "cold north" and the other side as the "warm south" (perhaps near a sunny window or a lamp).
Script: "Oh look! Your bird is ready! But Brrrr... it's getting so cold here in the north! And there is no food! Let's help your bird migrate. Can you make your bird fly all the way over to the warm south where it can find lots of food?"
Action: Guide the student to run or "fly" across the room with their puppet. Make bird noises together. When they reach the "south," celebrate!
Script: "You did it! Your bird migrated south! Now it is warm and happy for the winter. What a great trip!"
5. Assessment & Closure (1 minute)
Instruction: While the child is playing with their bird in the "warm south," ask a simple, reinforcing question.
Question: "Why did your bird fly all the way over here?"
Expected Answer: Simple responses like, "Because it was cold," or "To get warm," or "For food." The goal is not a perfect definition, but a demonstrated understanding of the basic concept.
Closing: "Great job helping your bird migrate today! In the spring, when it gets warm again, they'll fly all the way back home."
