Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts through fun activities using Barbie dolls.
Materials and Prep
- Barbie dolls (at least 2)
- Counting cards (numbers 1-10)
- Small objects for counting (e.g., buttons, beads, or blocks)
- Pen and paper
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of counting and addition.
Activities
-
Counting Barbie's Accessories
Take one of your Barbie dolls and gather all of her accessories (e.g., shoes, purses, or hats). Count each item one by one, and write down the total number. Repeat this activity with a different Barbie doll. Compare the total number of accessories for each doll and discuss which doll has more or fewer accessories.
-
Addition with Barbie Dolls
Choose two Barbie dolls and give each doll a specific number of accessories. For example, give one doll 3 accessories and the other doll 5 accessories. Ask the student to count the total number of accessories for both dolls and write down the sum. Encourage the student to use the counting cards or small objects for support if needed.
-
Subtraction with Barbie Dolls
Take one Barbie doll and remove a certain number of accessories. Ask the student to count the remaining accessories and write down the difference. Repeat this activity with a different number of accessories. Discuss the concept of subtraction and how it relates to taking away or removing items.
