Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills while playing outside.
Materials and Prep
- No materials needed
- Basic understanding of numbers and counting
Activities
-
Counting Steps: While playing outside, count the number of steps you take to reach different objects or landmarks. For example, count how many steps it takes to reach a tree or a bench.
-
Hopscotch Math: Draw a hopscotch grid on the ground using chalk. Instead of numbers, write simple arithmetic equations in each square. For example, write 2 + 3 in the first square and 4 - 1 in the second square. As you hop through the grid, solve the equations.
-
Shape Hunt: Look for different shapes while playing outside. When you find a shape, count the number of sides it has. For example, a square has four sides, and a circle has zero sides.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Did you know that we can practice math while playing outside? Let's have fun with numbers and shapes!"
- "When we count the steps to reach something, we are using numbers to help us understand distance."
- "Hopscotch is not only a fun game, but we can also solve math problems while jumping! Let's see how fast we can solve them."
- "Shapes are everywhere! Let's go on a shape hunt and count how many sides each shape has."
