Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to count sticks and understand their importance in the environment.

Materials and Prep

  • Counting sticks (gather sticks from your backyard or nearby park)

No additional preparation is required.

Activities

  1. Counting Sticks Game: Spread out the counting sticks on a table or the floor. Start by counting the sticks together from 1 to 10. Then, ask the student to count the sticks independently. Encourage them to touch each stick as they count to reinforce one-to-one correspondence.
  2. Stick Sorting: Ask the student to sort the sticks based on their length. Have them create groups of short sticks, medium sticks, and long sticks. This activity helps develop their observation and categorization skills.
  3. Outdoor Stick Hunt: Take a nature walk with the student and look for sticks in different shapes and sizes. Encourage them to collect a few sticks that catch their attention. Discuss why sticks are important in the environment, such as providing homes for insects or serving as a source of fuel for animals.
