Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, Viviana, Reggie, Allegra, and Florence will be able to:
- Develop Fine Motor Skills: Practice pinching, pulling apart cotton, and squeezing a glue bottle.
- Engage in Sensory Exploration: Explore textures (fluffy, wet, smooth) and concepts like pouring and mixing.
- Expand Language & Vocabulary: Use descriptive words like "spooky," "fluffy," "bubbly," and "cold" when discussing their activities.
- Practice Gross Motor Skills: Move their bodies in creative ways by dancing and acting like Halloween characters.
- Express Creativity: Create a unique piece of art that reflects their own ideas.
Lesson Plan Breakdown
Part 1: Welcome & Circle Time Song (5 minutes)
- Gather the children in a circle. Welcome each child by name: "Hello, Viviana! Hello, Reggie! Hello, Allegra! Hello, Florence! I'm so happy you're here for our spooky, not scary Halloween day!"
- Sing a simple, interactive song to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star":
Ghosts are floating, soft and white,
In the dark and spooky night.
Witches fly up in the sky,
On their brooms they zoom right by.
Ghosts are floating, soft and white,
In the dark and spooky night.
Encourage the children to wave their arms like floating ghosts as you sing.
Part 2: Activity - Puffy Ghost Art (10-15 minutes)
- Setup: Give each child a sheet of black construction paper. With a white crayon or marker, draw a simple ghost outline on each sheet. You can also let them draw their own "spooky shape."
- Instructions:
- Say, "We are going to make our very own fluffy ghosts! First, let's wake up our fingers." Have them wiggle their fingers.
- Show them how to squeeze the glue bottle to trace the ghost outline. Let them try squeezing glue inside the shape themselves. This is great for hand-strength!
- Give them a pile of cotton balls. Say, "Now, let's make our ghosts super fluffy! You can pull the cotton balls apart to make them extra soft, then stick them onto the glue."
- Once the ghost is covered, they can add googly eyes if you have them.
- Focus: This is a process-focused art activity. Praise their effort ("Reggie, look how you are carefully placing the cotton!") rather than the final product. Let their ghosts be lumpy, sparse, or overflowing with cotton. Set the artwork aside to dry.
Part 3: Activity - Witch's Brew Sensory Bin (15 minutes)
- Setup: On a towel or mat, present the sensory bin filled with green-tinted water. Add the plastic spiders, eyeballs, and other items. Place the bowls, ladles, and cauldrons nearby.
- Instructions:
- Introduce the activity: "Look what we have here! It's a bubbling Witch's Brew! What do you think is inside?"
- Let the children explore freely. They can scoop the water, "catch" the spiders, and transfer the "potion" from one container to another.
- Engage them with questions to encourage language: "Allegra, how does the water feel?" "Florence, can you scoop three spiders into your cauldron?" "Viviana, what potion are you making?"
- Focus: This activity is about open-ended play and sensory discovery. It develops hand-eye coordination, early math skills (counting, volume), and social skills as they share tools.
Part 4: Movement Break - The Monster Mash! (5 minutes)
- Announce, "All this potion-making has given us some spooky energy! It's time to dance!"
- Play the song "Monster Mash."
- Encourage the children to move their bodies in different ways. Call out prompts like: "Stomp like a monster!" "Float like a ghost!" "Crawl like a spider!" "Fly like a bat!"
- Join in and dance with them to model enthusiasm and fun.
Part 5: Wrap-up & Story Time (5-7 minutes)
- After dancing, help the children calm their bodies by taking a few deep "monster breaths" (breathe in, then roar it out softly).
- Gather in a comfy spot and read a "spooky, not scary" Halloween picture book.
- As you read, point to the pictures and ask questions. "What do you think will happen next?"
- Conclude by telling them what wonderful artists, potion-makers, and dancers they were today. Briefly show them their drying puffy ghost art.
Differentiation & Inclusivity
- For children needing more support:
- During the art activity, help guide their hand while squeezing the glue bottle or start the tears in the cotton balls for them.
- At the sensory bin, a child hesitant to touch the water can be given tongs or a large ladle to interact from a distance first.
- For children seeking a challenge:
- Encourage them to create a story about their puffy ghost. "What is your ghost's name? Where does it live?"
- At the sensory bin, ask them to sort the items by color or type (all the spiders here, all the eyeballs there).
- General: The activities are open-ended, allowing Viviana, Reggie, Allegra, and Florence to engage at their individual developmental levels. The focus is on exploration, not a "right" way to play.
Assessment (Informal Observation)
Throughout the lesson, observe and make mental notes:
- Fine Motor: Is the child able to use a pincer grasp (thumb and forefinger) to pick up googly eyes or pull cotton? Are they attempting to squeeze the glue bottle?
- Language: Is the child using new words from the lesson (fluffy, spooky, brew)? Are they responding to questions?
- Social-Emotional: Are the children sharing the tools at the sensory bin? Are they showing excitement and engagement?
- Gross Motor: Is the child participating in the dance and attempting the different movements?
