Ily's Canine Investigator Day: From Wolf to Woof!

Materials Needed:

  • Large sheet of paper or whiteboard
  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
  • Drawing paper
  • Access to the internet for short, teacher-approved videos
  • Scissors and glue (optional)
  • Recycled craft supplies like cardboard tubes, boxes, yarn, cotton balls (for the final project)
  • A printed copy of the "Design-a-Breed" worksheet (template included below)

Learning Objectives

By the end of today's lesson, you (Ily) will be able to:

  1. Describe the amazing journey of how ancient wolves became the dogs we love today.
  2. Identify three different groups of dog breeds and explain the type of job they were bred for.
  3. Design your very own, unique dog breed with a special purpose, appearance, and personality.

Part 1: Morning Expedition - The Great Dog Detective (9:30 AM - 11:00 AM)

Step 1: The First Clue - What is a Dog? (15 minutes)

Let's start our investigation! On your large sheet of paper or whiteboard, write "DOG" in the middle. Now, let's brainstorm. What words, ideas, or feelings come to mind when you think of a dog? Draw or write everything you can think of. Think about:

  • What do they look like? (fur, tails, wet noses)
  • What sounds do they make? (bark, woof, growl)
  • What do they do? (play fetch, sleep, eat, protect)
  • What are some dogs you know? (family pets, cartoon dogs)

Teacher Note: This activity activates prior knowledge and gets Ily excited about the topic.

Step 2: Time Travel to the Ice Age! (45 minutes)

Did you know that every single dog, from the tiniest Chihuahua to the biggest Great Dane, has an ancient relative? A wolf! Let's travel back in time to see how this happened.

  1. Watch a Video: Let's watch this short, fun video to learn about dog domestication: "How Did Dogs Get To Be Dogs?" by SciShow Kids. It's a great starting point for our discussion.
  2. Discussion:
    • Why do you think some wolves started hanging around humans? (Maybe for leftover food!)
    • How did humans help the wolves? (Warmth from the fire, protection.)
    • How did the wolves help the humans? (Guarding camps, helping hunt.)
  3. Create a Timeline: On a piece of paper, draw a simple timeline. On the far left, draw a Wolf. On the far right, draw a modern Pet Dog (maybe your favorite kind!). In the middle, draw a picture showing a wolf and an early human sitting near a campfire, becoming friends. This shows the journey from wild wolf to "woof"!

Step 3: Meet the Families - Breed Groups (30 minutes)

Over thousands of years, humans needed dogs to do specific jobs. So, they chose dogs with the best skills for each job—like the best swimmers, the fastest runners, or the best sniffers. This is how we got "breeds"! Let's meet a few of the main "families," or groups.

Activity: Breed Group Match-Up!

Let's explore three groups. I'll describe the group, and we can look up pictures of dogs that belong to it.

  • The Herding Group: These dogs are super smart and were bred to help farmers move sheep and cattle. They are like fluffy little shepherds! (Examples: Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Corgi)
  • The Sporting Group: These dogs are active and were bred to help hunters, especially by finding and retrieving birds. They often love water and playing fetch! (Examples: Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel)
  • The Toy Group: These tiny dogs were bred to be companions and lap-warmers. Their main job is to be an adorable friend! (Examples: Pug, Chihuahua, Shih Tzu)

Your Mission: Can you name one thing all the dogs in the Herding Group might be good at? What about the Sporting Group?

Lunch & Brain Break (11:00 AM - 12:00 PM)

Time to refuel! Enjoy lunch. If you can, spend some time playing with a pet or watch a short, fun clip from a dog movie like Bolt or 101 Dalmatians.

Part 2: Afternoon Creation Lab - Design-a-Breed! (12:00 PM - 1:30 PM)

Step 1: The Challenge (15 minutes)

Welcome to the Ily Innovation Lab! You are now a world-famous canine scientist. You have been given a special mission: create a brand-new dog breed that the world has never seen before!

First, your dog needs a job. What problem can your new dog breed solve? Let's brainstorm some ideas:

  • A dog that helps find lost TV remotes in the couch.
  • A dog specially trained to cheer people up when they are sad.
  • A super-sniffer dog that can find the missing sock from the laundry.
  • A helper dog for astronauts in space!

Choose the special job your new dog breed will have.

Step 2: Invent Your Dog! (45 minutes)

Now it's time to bring your dog to life! Use the "Design-a-Breed" worksheet below to plan everything about your new dog. Then, you can either draw a detailed picture of it or build a 3D model using your craft supplies.

Design-a-Breed Worksheet

Name of Your New Breed: _________________________

What is its special job? _________________________________________________________________

What two (or more) real breeds did you "mix" to make it? (e.g., "I mixed the intelligence of a Border Collie with the small size of a Pug.")

_________________________________________________________________

Appearance (Circle or write your answers):

  • Size: Tiny / Small / Medium / Large / Giant
  • Coat: Short & Smooth / Long & Fluffy / Curly / Wiry
  • Ears: Pointy / Floppy / Somewhere in between
  • Special Features: (e.g., spots, a super-waggy tail, webbed feet for swimming, extra-large eyes for seeing in the dark) _________________________

Personality (Circle three words that describe your dog):

Brave | Playful | Calm | Energetic | Goofy | Loyal | Smart | Cuddly

Step 3: Show and Tell - The World Premiere! (30 minutes)

It's time to introduce your new dog breed to the world! Give a presentation about your creation. Holding up your drawing or model, tell me all about it:

  • What is its name?
  • What is its special job and how do its features help it do that job?
  • What is its personality like?
  • What makes your dog the best new breed in the world?

Teacher Note: This is the assessment. It shows if Ily can apply the concepts of breed traits and purpose in a creative and articulate way. Celebrate her creativity and thoughtful design!

Extensions & Wrap-Up

Our investigation is complete for today, but your journey into the world of dogs can continue!

  • For a Challenge: Research a breed you've never heard of before. Where did it come from? What was its original job?
  • For the Bookworm: Read a book about a famous dog, like Balto or Because of Winn-Dixie.
  • For the Helper: With a parent's help, learn about a local animal shelter and what it does to help dogs in your community.
