Lesson Start: Welcome to Hogwarts!

"Welcome, young witch or wizard, to your first maths lesson at Hogwarts! Before we begin, let's see which house you'll be in today." (Place the 'Sorting Hat' on the student's head and declare a house - Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin). "Excellent! Now, let's learn some magic with numbers!"

Activity 1: Counting Magical Items (10-15 minutes)

  • Gringotts Bank: Spread out the 'Galleons,' 'Sickles,' and 'Knuts'. "This is our Gringotts vault! Let's count the treasure." Guide the student to count each type of coin up to 10. Match the counted group with the corresponding number card.
  • Magical Creatures: If using pictures/figures, lay them out. "Look! Some magical creatures have appeared! How many Hippogriffs (or other creatures) do you see?" Count together. Repeat with different small groups of items (e.g., owls, broomsticks, potion bottles).

Activity 2: Diagon Alley Addition (10-15 minutes)

  • "Let's go shopping in Diagon Alley! We need our Galleons."
  • Present simple addition problems using the counters. "Harry bought a chocolate frog for 2 Knuts and Bertie Bott's Every-Flavor Beans for 3 Knuts. How many Knuts did he spend? Let's use our coins to find out." (Guide the student to make a group of 2 and a group of 3, then combine and count).
  • Repeat with other simple scenarios: "Ron found 1 Sickle and Hermione gave him 2 more. How many Sickles does Ron have now?" Use counters and write the simple number sentence (e.g., 1 + 2 = 3) on the whiteboard/paper. Use the 'wand' to point to numbers while counting.

Activity 3: Potions Class Subtraction (10 minutes)

  • "Oh dear, some ingredients have disappeared in Potions class!"
  • Present simple subtraction problems. "Professor Snape had 5 potion bottles, but 2 vanished! How many are left? Let's start with 5 counters and take 2 away." (Guide the student to count out 5 counters, remove 2, and count the remaining ones).
  • Write the number sentence (e.g., 5 - 2 = 3).
  • Repeat: "You had 4 Galleons, but spent 1 on a feather quill. How many Galleons are left?"

Wrap-up: House Points! (5 minutes)

"You've done wonderfully with your magical maths today! Let's review. Can you count these 7 Galleons? If you have 2 Sickles and find 2 more, how many do you have?" Review one or two simple addition/subtraction facts covered.

"For your excellent work, [Student's House] earns 10 house points! Well done!" (Give praise). Optional: Complete a simple themed worksheet page if desired.
