Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of physics through hands-on activities with Playdoh.
Materials and Prep
- Playdoh (different colors)
- A flat surface to work on
- Optional: Rolling pin
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson. Just come ready to have fun!
Activities
-
Activity 1: Playdoh Shapes
Start by exploring the different shapes you can create with Playdoh. Roll the Playdoh into balls, flatten it to make circles, and use your imagination to make other shapes like squares and triangles.
-
Activity 2: Playdoh Towers
Now, let's see how tall of a tower you can build using Playdoh. Stack the Playdoh pieces on top of each other to create a tower. See if you can make it taller by adding more pieces.
-
Activity 3: Playdoh Boats
Can Playdoh float? Let's find out! Shape a small boat out of Playdoh and place it in a container of water. Observe what happens. Does it sink or float? Try making different boat shapes and see if they behave differently.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Physics is a branch of science that helps us understand how things work."
- "Playdoh is a fun material that we can use to learn about physics."
- "Shapes are all around us. We can use Playdoh to create different shapes like circles, squares, and triangles."
- "When we stack Playdoh pieces on top of each other, we can create tall towers. The taller the tower, the more pieces we need."
- "We can also use Playdoh to make boats. We can see if the Playdoh boats float or sink in water."
- "Through these activities, we are learning about how things can be shaped, stacked, and how they interact with water."
