Lesson Plan: Roblox Reading and Design Adventure

Materials Needed:

  • A printed copy of the "Welcome to Roblox World!" reading passage (provided below)
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Lined paper for writing
  • Blank paper for drawing
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • (Optional) A whiteboard and marker for modeling

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Read a short passage about a familiar topic out loud.
  • Answer one or two questions about what you read.
  • Write one complete sentence about your favorite game.
  • Draw a creative picture of your own Roblox character or world.

Lesson Activities

Part 1: Introduction (5 minutes)

Hook: Let's Talk Games!

  • Educator says: "What is your absolute favorite game to play on Roblox? Tell me one super fun thing you love to do in that game."
  • Listen to the student's answer and show excitement.
  • Educator says: "That sounds amazing! Today, we are going on a Roblox adventure right here with our reading, writing, and drawing. First, we will read a story about Roblox. Then, you will get to be an author and write about your favorite game. Finally, you’ll be an artist and design your very own Roblox character!"

Part 2: Body - Reading and Writing Adventure (15-20 minutes)

Activity 1: Reading about Roblox World (I do, We do, You do)

Success Criteria: You can read the story and tell me something you learned.

  1. I Do (Modeling):
    • Educator says: "First, I'm going to read the title and the first sentence to show you how a good reader sounds. I'll use my reading finger to point to the words. 'Welcome to Roblox World! Roblox is a world full of games.'"
  2. We Do (Shared Reading):
    • Educator says: "Now, let's read the next few sentences together. You can be my echo, or we can read at the same time. Ready?"
    • Read the next section of the passage together, pointing to the words as you go. Help with any tricky words.
  3. You Do (Independent Reading):
    • Educator says: "Wow, you are a great reading partner! Now it's your turn to be the star. Read the rest of the story out loud for me. I am here to help if you get stuck on a word."
    • The student reads the remainder of the passage. Provide gentle encouragement and support.

Reading Passage: Welcome to Roblox World!

Roblox is a world full of games. You can build anything you can imagine!

You get a special character called an avatar. You can change your avatar to look just like you, or you can make it silly. Give it a cool hat or funny glasses!

In Roblox, you can visit many places. You can race cars in one game. You can take care of cute pets in another. You can even build your own tall tower or cozy house. It is fun to play with friends. You can explore new worlds together. What game will you play today?

Formative Assessment: Quick Question Time!

  • Educator asks: "Great reading! Can you tell me, what is the name of your character in Roblox?" (Answer: an avatar)
  • Educator asks: "What is one fun thing the story said you can do in a Roblox game?" (Answer: race cars, take care of pets, build a house, etc.)

Activity 2: Writing Your Super Sentence (I do, We do, You do)

Success Criteria: Your sentence starts with a capital letter, ends with a period (.), and has finger spaces between the words.

  1. I Do (Modeling):
    • Educator says: "Now you get to be a writer! I'm going to write a sentence about a game I like. Watch me. I'll start with a big capital letter. 'I'. Then I'll use a finger space. 'like'. Finger space. 'to'. Finger space. 'play'. Finger space. 'Adopt Me'. And I'll finish with a period to stop the sentence. '.' My sentence says: I like to play Adopt Me."
    • (Model this on a whiteboard or piece of paper).
  2. We Do (Shared Writing):
    • Educator says: "Okay, let's think of a sentence for you. What is your favorite game? Let's say it out loud." (Example: "I love Brookhaven.")
    • Educator says: "Great! Let’s plan it. What's the first word? 'I'. Does it need a capital or lowercase letter? Right, a capital! What comes after each word? A finger space! What goes at the very end? A period!"
  3. You Do (Independent Writing):
    • Educator says: "Now it's your turn! On your paper, write your own sentence about the Roblox game you love to play. Remember our rules: capital letter, finger spaces, and a period at the end."
    • Provide the lined paper and pencil. Offer help with spelling if needed, but encourage sounding out words.

Part 3: Body - Creative Design (10 minutes)

Activity 3: Design Your Own Avatar! (You do)

Success Criteria: You draw a picture that shows a character or a scene from a Roblox game.

  • Educator says: "You have been an amazing reader and writer. Now it's time to be a famous artist and game designer! On this paper, I want you to draw your very own, unique Roblox avatar. What will it wear? Will it have a silly hat? A cool pet? Or you can draw a scene from your favorite game. You are the boss of this world!"
  • Provide blank paper and drawing materials. Let the student be creative.

Part 4: Conclusion (5 minutes)

Show and Tell & Recap

  • Educator says: "Wow! Can you please show me your amazing artwork? Tell me about the character you created."
  • Ask the student to read their sentence aloud one more time while pointing to their drawing.
  • Educator says: "You did so many incredible things today! You read a whole story about Roblox, you wrote a fantastic sentence like a real author, and you designed a super creative character. You are a reading, writing, and drawing superstar!"

Differentiation and Extensions

  • For Extra Support:
    • Reading: Read the entire passage to the student, and have them point to the words. Focus on just one or two sight words.
    • Writing: Provide a sentence starter like "I like _______." or "My game is _______." The student only fills in the blank. They can also dictate the sentence to you, and then they can trace it.
    • Drawing: Provide a simple avatar template or outline for them to color and decorate.
  • For an Extra Challenge:
    • Reading: Ask a "why" question, such as "Why do you think it's fun to play with friends in Roblox?"
    • Writing: Challenge the student to write two sentences. Ask them to add a describing word (adjective), like "I like the fun game Brookhaven."
    • Drawing: Ask them to label parts of their drawing or give their character a name and write it on the page.
