Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create a water bottle cyclone and understand the basic principles of physics behind it.

Materials and Prep

  • An empty plastic water bottle with a cap
  • A bucket or basin filled with water
  • A sharp object (e.g., a needle or pin)
  • A marker or pen
  • A towel or paper towels for cleanup

Prior knowledge required: None

Activities

  1. Fill the plastic water bottle with water, leaving a small amount of air at the top.
  2. Screw the cap tightly onto the bottle.
  3. Hold the bottle upside down and start spinning it in a circular motion.
  4. Observe the water inside the bottle forming a cyclone or vortex.
  5. Experiment with different spinning speeds and directions to see how it affects the cyclone.
  6. Discuss and record your observations.

Toddler Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to learn about a fun experiment called the water bottle cyclone!"
  • "We will need an empty water bottle, water, and a bucket or basin."
  • "First, let's fill the water bottle with water and leave a little bit of air at the top."
  • "Next, we will screw the cap tightly onto the bottle."
  • "Now, we will hold the bottle upside down and start spinning it in a circle."
  • "Look! The water inside the bottle is forming a spinning tornado called a cyclone!"
  • "We can try spinning the bottle faster or slower to see how it affects the cyclone."
  • "Let's discuss and write down what we observe during our experiment."
