Objective

By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to identify and describe garbage trucks in Spanish, and learn a few basic phrases related to garbage trucks in Spanish.

Materials and Prep

• Toy garbage truck
• Flashcards with pictures of garbage trucks
• Whiteboard or paper and markers
• Printed picture of a garbage truck
• Spanish-English picture dictionary (optional)

Activities

• Show and Tell: Start by showing the toddler the toy garbage truck and ask them to describe it in English. Then, introduce the Spanish word for garbage truck, "camión de basura", and ask them to repeat it after you. Show them the flashcards with pictures of garbage trucks and ask them to identify the trucks in Spanish.
• Draw and Label: Using the whiteboard or paper, draw a simple outline of a garbage truck and ask the toddler to label the different parts in Spanish. For example, "ruedas" for wheels, "ventanas" for windows, "brazos" for arms (referring to the mechanical arms that pick up the garbage), etc.
• Matching Game: Print out a picture of a garbage truck and cut it into pieces. Mix up the pieces and ask the toddler to match them correctly. As they match each piece, encourage them to say the corresponding Spanish word for that part.
• Useful Phrases: Teach the toddler a few useful phrases related to garbage trucks in Spanish. For example, "¡Recoge la basura!" (Pick up the garbage!), "¡Vamos al vertedero!" (Let's go to the landfill!), or "¡El camión de basura está vacío!" (The garbage truck is empty!). Practice saying these phrases together.
