Lesson Plan: Character Creation Workshop - Level Up Your Sentences!

Materials Needed:

  • Cherai's previously created game ideas and character sketches
  • Index cards or paper (or a digital document/drawing app)
  • Pencils, markers, and colored pencils (especially red, blue, and green)
  • A "Word Treasury" list (a pre-prepared list of fun nouns, verbs, and adjectives - example provided in the lesson)

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Identify nouns (naming words), verbs (action words), and adjectives (describing words).
  • Construct descriptive sentences about your game characters using at least one noun, one verb, and one adjective.
  • Create an official "Character Profile Card" that brings one of your characters to life with descriptive language.

Lesson Activities

Part 1: Introduction - The Power of Words (10 minutes)

Hook: "Cherai, you have created some amazing characters for your game! We know what they look like from your drawings, but how do we tell a story about them? How do we explain who they are and what they can do? Words are like power-ups for our imagination. Today, we're going to learn the secret code to build powerful sentences that will make your characters jump right off the page!"

Stating Objectives: "Our mission today is to become a master sentence-builder! We will learn to spot three types of 'power words' and use them to create an official Character Profile Card for your favorite character."

Part 2: The Body of the Lesson - Building Your Sentence Superpowers

Activity 1: Meet the Power Words (I Do - 10 minutes)

Let's learn about the three most important words in our sentence-building toolkit. Think of them as the different members of an adventuring party!

  • NOUNS (The Hero): These are the naming words. They name a person, place, or thing. In your game, the nouns are your characters (wizard, robot), the places (castle, forest), and the items (sword, potion). They are the "who" or "what" of the sentence.
  • VERBS (The Action): These are the action words. They show what the noun is doing. Verbs are the exciting part! Do they jump, run, fly, think, cast, or explore? This is the "what they do" part.
  • ADJECTIVES (The Magic): These are the describing words. They add magic and detail! They tell us more about the noun. Is it a brave wizard? A dark castle? A glowing sword? They make your sentences more interesting and colorful.

Example: Let's look at this sentence: "The brave knight fights."

  • The Hero (Noun) is the knight.
  • The Action (Verb) is fights.
  • The Magic (Adjective) is brave. It tells us more about the knight!

Activity 2: Word Treasury Sort (We Do - 15 minutes)

"Now, let's practice spotting these words. I have a 'Word Treasury' list here. Together, let's sort these words into three chests: Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives."

Word Treasury List:

(You can write these on small pieces of paper for a hands-on sorting game or just read them aloud and decide together.)

dragon, sleepy, jumps, mysterious, scientist, builds, ancient, potion, fast, discovers, sneaky, robot, shiny, guards, treasure, clever, explores, friendly, hero, creates

Work with Cherai to categorize each word. Discuss why each word fits into its category. ("Is 'dragon' a thing? Yes! So it's a noun. Is 'sleepy' describing something? Yes! So it's an adjective.")

Activity 3: Create Your Character Profile Card (You Do - 20 minutes)

"This is your main quest! It's time to make your character official. You are going to create a Character Profile Card."

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Choose Your Character: Pick one of your favorite characters from the game you designed.
  2. Get Your Card: Take an index card or a piece of paper.
  3. Draw Your Hero: On the top half of the card, draw a picture of your character in action.
  4. Write the Profile: On the bottom half, you will write your character's profile. It needs:
    • The character's name.
    • At least three descriptive sentences about them.
  5. The Sentence Challenge: Each sentence you write must contain at least one noun, one verb, and one adjective.
  6. Color-Code Your Words: Once you've written your sentences, use your colored pencils to find and mark the power words:
    • Underline all the NOUNS in blue.
    • Circle all the VERBS in red.
    • Put a box around all the ADJECTIVES in green.

Success Criteria (What a great card looks like):

  • A colorful drawing of the character.
  • Three (or more) complete sentences.
  • All three power words (noun, verb, adjective) are used and correctly color-coded in each sentence.

Example Sentence for a character named 'Zorp':

The clever robot builds amazing gadgets.

Part 3: Conclusion - Showcase and Recap (5 minutes)

Show and Tell: "Mission complete! Now it's time to present your character. Tell me about them by reading your Character Profile Card aloud. Show me the power words you found!"

Recap: "You did an incredible job today. You've learned how to use words to bring your characters to life. Let's quickly review our three power words:

  • What do Nouns do? (They name a person, place, or thing!)
  • What do Verbs do? (They show the action!)
  • And what special magic do Adjectives add? (They describe the nouns!)

Final Takeaway: "You can now use this skill to write amazing descriptions for all the characters, items, and worlds in your game. You're not just a game designer, you're a storyteller!"

Assessment

  • Formative (During the lesson): Observing Cherai during the Word Treasury sort and providing feedback as she builds her first sentence.
  • Summative (End of lesson): The completed Character Profile Card is the final assessment. It will clearly show if she can apply the concepts of nouns, verbs, and adjectives to create her own descriptive sentences.

Differentiation and Extension

  • For Extra Support: Provide a sentence frame to help start, such as: "The [adjective] [noun] [verb]..." You can also offer a smaller, more focused word bank from the 'Word Treasury' that relates directly to her character.
  • For an Extra Challenge: Encourage her to write a short paragraph (4-5 sentences) for the character's backstory. Challenge her to use two adjectives in one sentence (e.g., "The brave, clever hero..."). Introduce adverbs (words that describe verbs, often ending in -ly) like quickly, quietly, or loudly.
