Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and apply English grammar rules in public speaking situations.
Materials and Prep
- Pen or pencil
- Paper
- Access to a computer or smartphone with internet
Before starting the lesson, the student should have a basic understanding of sentence structure, parts of speech, and punctuation.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Parts of Speech Scavenger Hunt
Ask the student to find examples of different parts of speech in a speech or presentation of their choice. They can watch a TED Talk, a YouTube video, or even listen to a podcast. In a notebook, have them create a table with columns for nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions. As they listen or watch, they should jot down examples of each part of speech they hear. Afterward, discuss their findings and clarify any questions they may have.
-
Activity 2: Grammar Improv
Encourage the student to practice their public speaking skills while incorporating proper grammar. Provide them with a random topic or ask them to choose one themselves. They should prepare a short impromptu speech, focusing on using correct grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation. After delivering the speech, provide constructive feedback and discuss areas for improvement.
-
Activity 3: Grammar Olympics
Create a friendly competition by challenging the student to identify and correct grammar mistakes in a set of sentences. Prepare a list of sentences with intentional errors in grammar, such as subject-verb agreement, punctuation, or capitalization. The student should work through each sentence, identifying the mistake and providing the correct version. Award points for each correct answer, and discuss the correct answers together.
