Articulation Lesson Plan: Master the Initial 'S' Sound (Sigmatism) with Fun Activities

A comprehensive articulation lesson plan designed to help students master the initial 'S' sound. Learn correct tongue placement, focused airflow control, and practice /s/ in words and sentences using fun activities like 'Mirror Magic' and an 'S-Sound Scavenger Hunt.' Super S-Sound Safari! (Focus: Initial /s/ Articulation)

Materials Needed

  • Small mirror (handheld or wall-mounted) for visual feedback
  • Printable pictures or small objects that start with the 'S' sound (e.g., sun, sock, star, six)
  • Paper and crayons/markers
  • A small, clean drinking straw or whistle (optional, for air direction modeling)
  • Stickers or small tokens for positive reinforcement

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the Learner will be able to:

  1. Identify the correct mouth and tongue position needed to produce the 'S' sound (the "Snake Sound").
  2. Accurately produce the 'S' sound in isolation and at the beginning of simple words with 80% accuracy.
  3. Demonstrate a 5-minute daily practice routine using 'S' words.

Part 1: The Safari Kickoff (Introduction & Hook)

Hook (5 minutes)

Educator Script: "Did you know that snakes don't have ears, but they can feel the world around them? And what sound does a snake make? Ssssss! Today, we are going to become articulation adventurers and learn how to make the best, strongest 'S' sound possible—just like a super snake!"

Success Criteria

We know we have succeeded when:

  • We can see our teeth smiling when we make the sound.
  • The air whispers out the front of our mouth, not the sides.
  • We can say five 'S' words correctly.

Part 2: Mouth Mapping (I Do: Modeling)

The Smiling Snake Sound (5 minutes)

Activity: Mirror Magic

I Do: (Educator models while Learner watches in the mirror.)

  1. The Teeth Gate: "Look at your mirror. We need to smile! Your teeth need to be close together, almost touching, but not biting." (Educator demonstrates a slight smile.)
  2. The Quiet Tongue: "Your tongue is going to be quiet and flat, resting gently behind your bottom teeth. We don't want the tip of the tongue to peek out, or the snake sound will hiss wrongly!"
  3. The Air Whisper: "Now, push a tiny, cold stream of air right over the middle of your tongue and through the small gap in your teeth. Listen! Sssssss." (Educator models the clean sound.)

(Optional Scaffolding: If the air is coming out the sides, have the Learner practice blowing air straight through a straw to focus the air stream.)

Part 3: Practice Paths (We Do: Guided Practice)

Warm-Up and Syllables (10 minutes)

Activity 1: Lip & Tongue Calisthenics

  1. Lip Zippers: Make your lips tight and wide, then loose and round (like a fish face). Repeat 5 times.
  2. Tongue Taps: Gently tap the tip of your tongue behind your top front teeth (like saying 'tuh, tuh, tuh'). This helps awareness.
  3. Air Pushes: Place your hand in front of your mouth and whisper 'Sssss' so you can feel the cool air hitting your palm.

Activity 2: Syllable Train

We Do: (Educator says a syllable; Learner repeats, focusing on starting with a strong 'S'.)

  • SA! SA! SA! (Like Santa!)
  • SEE! SEE! SEE! (Like the ocean!)
  • SO! SO! SO! (Like sew a button!)
  • SUE! SUE! SUE! (Like a silly name!)
  • SY! SY! SY! (Like sip)

Formative Check: Stop after each repetition. "Did your tongue stay behind your bottom teeth? Give me a thumbs up if you felt the air whisper out the middle!"

Part 4: Real-World Reporting (You Do: Independent Application)

The S-Sound Scavenger Hunt (15 minutes)

Activity: Find and Say

You Do: (Educator hides 5-7 'S' objects/pictures around the immediate learning area.)

  1. Learner finds one 'S' object (e.g., sock).
  2. Learner returns and practices saying the word five times clearly, focusing on the strong initial 'S'. (Example: "Sock. Sock. Sock. Sock. Sock.")
  3. Learner draws a quick picture of the object and says the word one more time to the Educator for a "sticker stamp."
  4. Repeat until all objects are found.

Silly Sentence Creation

Activity: Building Sentences

You Do: Using three of the words they found (e.g., Sun, Star, Six), the Learner creates a very silly sentence. This pushes the sound into a connected speech context.

  • Example Sentence Prompt: "The [Sun] saw the [Star] when I was [Six]."
  • Learner practices saying their silly sentence 3 times slowly and clearly.

(Extension for Advanced Learners: Use words that include the 'S' sound in the middle or end, such as 'dress' or 'biscuit'.)

Part 5: Daily Practice Plan (Closure & Recap)

Review and Reinforcement (5 minutes)

Recap Discussion: "What are the three most important things to remember when we make the 'S' sound?" (Educator guides them to recall Smiling Teeth, Quiet Tongue, Air Whisper.)

Summative Assessment: Daily Routine Design

To make sure our progress sticks, we need a short daily routine. We will call it "The Super 5."

Educator and Learner collaborate to choose five words or phrases to practice every day for one week:

  1. Say the "S" sound alone 10 times.
  2. Say our "Silly Sentence" (from Part 4) 5 times.
  3. Say the name of a sibling, friend, or pet that starts with 'S' (or choose a favorite word like 'soccer').
  4. Sing a short 'S' sound song (e.g., adapting "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" to "See, See, See the Sun...").
  5. Look in the mirror and practice smiling for the 'S' sound.

Feedback and Next Steps: Give specific feedback on a successful attempt. Example: "I loved how you kept your tongue behind your bottom teeth when you said 'Sun'! That was a perfect snake sound!"

Challenge: Practice the Super 5 routine every day until our next session. We will start our next lesson by sharing how many days we practiced!
