My Amazing Adventure Outside!

Materials Needed

  • A simple storybook about nature, animals, or walking/exploring.
  • Drawing supplies (large paper, crayons/markers).
  • Shape cards (Circle, Rectangle).
  • Container or small basket for collecting objects.
  • Optional: Access to a yard, park, or indoor collection of natural items (rocks, leaves, sticks, stuffed animals).
  • Picture examples of the Sun, Moon, and Clouds (if outdoor viewing is not possible).

Learning Objectives (We will know/be able to do...)

By the end of this lesson, Alex will be able to:

  • Literacy: Identify the sound of the letter 'S' (s-s-s) and correctly answer simple "Who," "What," and "Where" questions about the activity.
  • Math: Rote count up to 5 and identify at least one circle and one rectangle in the environment.
  • Science/Observation: Use descriptive words (colors, big/small, long/short) to compare two objects and classify those objects as living or non-living.

Introduction: Get Ready to Explore! (10 Minutes)

Hook: Making Sounds

Educator (I Do): "Good morning, Alex! We are going on an adventure today! But first, let’s get our exploring ears ready. We are going to learn about the letter 'S'! S says /s-s-s/ like a slippery snake! Can you make the snake sound with me? Ssssss!" (Model the sound and motion.)

Setting the Scene & Objectives

Educator (I Do): "Today we are going to look around us and find amazing things! We will:

  1. Find things and say the /s/ sound! (Literacy)
  2. Count how many things we find! (Math)
  3. Draw a picture of our big adventure! (Art/Communication)

Are you ready? Let's go!

Body: Exploring and Discovering (35 Minutes)

Phase 1: Story Time & Inquiry (We Do)

Activity: Reading a short, engaging story about a character exploring the outdoors (e.g., finding a bug, seeing a flower).

Success Criteria: Alex answers simple "Who," "What," and "Where" questions.

Step 1: Focus Reading

  • Read the story slowly, using expressive voice.
  • Pause frequently to engage Alex.

Step 2: Asking Questions (Q&A Practice)

  • Where: (Pointing to the picture) "Where is the puppy hiding?" (Model answer: The puppy is under the tree.)
  • What: (Pointing to an object) "What is that big red thing?" (Model answer: It is a flower!)
  • Who: (Pointing to a character) "Who is running fast?" (Model answer: The boy is running!)

Transition: "Wow, that was a fun story! Now let’s go on our OWN adventure, just like in the book! Let’s put on our shoes!"

Phase 2: Observation & Classification (I Do / We Do)

Activity: Stepping outside (or examining collected nature items indoors) to observe the world and classify objects.

Step 1: Look at the Sky & 'S' Sound (Science/Literacy Integration)

  • I Do: Point up. "Look up at the sky! We see the Sun! S-S-S-Sun! What else do you see up there? (Stars, Moon, Clouds – name the objects.)

Step 2: Living vs. Non-Living

  • We Do: Ask Alex to pick up two very different objects (e.g., a rock and a leaf or a stick).
  • Modeling: Hold the rock. "Is this alive? Can it move or eat? No. It’s a non-living thing."
  • Practice: Hold the leaf/stick. "Is this alive? It was part of a living plant! But this rock can't move. Living things grow, non-living things do not."
  • Sort items into two piles: Living (was alive) and Not Living (never alive).

Phase 3: Math and Measurement Fun (You Do)

Activity: Using collected items to practice counting, shapes, and comparison.

Step 1: Counting Practice (Rote Counting)

  • We Do: Ask Alex to put three items into the basket.
  • Practice: Count them out loud together, touching each one: "One, two, three!" (Repeat up to five items.)

Step 2: Shapes Search

  • I Do: Show the Circle shape card. "This is a circle! What shape is that?"
  • You Do: "Can you find something outside that is a circle? (e.g., a stone, a coin, a button)."
  • We Do: Repeat with the Rectangle shape card (e.g., a book, a small piece of wood, a sidewalk slab).

Step 3: Comparison and Color (Measurement)

  • I Do: Pick up two sticks or leaves. "Look! This one is very long! This one is short! Long and short."
  • We Do: Ask Alex to compare two rocks. "Which rock is heavy? Which rock is light?" (Encourage safe lifting.)
  • Practice: "What color is the big rock? (e.g., gray) What color is the small leaf? (e.g., green). The gray rock is bigger than the green leaf."

Conclusion: Drawing Our Adventure (15 Minutes)

Recap and Creative Communication (Summative Assessment)

Activity: Alex communicates his ideas through drawing.

Step 1: Draw the Story

  • I Do: Sit down with the drawing supplies. "Now let's tell everyone about our adventure! What was your favorite thing we saw? Did we see the S-S-S-Sun? Did we find a long stick?"
  • You Do: Encourage Alex to draw the objects found (long stick, round rock, green leaf). Encourage the use of letter-like forms, scribbles, and recognizable shapes to communicate his ideas.

Step 2: Closure & Review

  • "Tell me about your picture! What is this big circle you drew?" (Formative check on shapes and understanding.)
  • "Great job today! We made the S sound, we counted our treasures, and we told a story with our crayons!"

Differentiation and Adaptability

Scaffolding (For Support)

  • Counting: If counting to 5 is difficult, focus on 1:1 correspondence for 3 objects only.
  • Measurement: Focus only on color and size (big/small). Skip weight and width initially.
  • Q&A: Provide two choices for answers (e.g., "Is the puppy under the tree or on the bench?").

Extension (For Challenge)

  • Phonics: Introduce a second letter sound related to nature (e.g., 'T' for Tree).
  • Math: Practice counting to 10. Introduce the difference between width and length (narrow vs. wide).
  • Shapes: Introduce the Triangle shape. Ask Alex to create a picture using only the three shapes (circle, rectangle, triangle).
  • Science: Create a matching game: Match the sky object to its picture (sun during day, moon/stars at night).

Assessment Criteria (Success Check)

Skill Focus Formative Assessment (During Lesson) Summative Assessment (Conclusion)
Literacy (Sound, Q&A) Alex correctly repeats the /s/ sound and answers at least three simple Who/What/Where questions during story time. Alex points to a representation of the sun or sky in the drawing and says the 'S' sound.
Math (Counting, Shapes, Measurement) Alex correctly identifies two objects that are long/short, heavy/light, and rote counts 5 collected items. Alex identifies two different 2D shapes (circle, rectangle) during the final review.
Science/Communication Alex correctly places two items into "Living" and "Non-Living" categories. Alex uses colors and scribbles/letter-like forms in the drawing to communicate the adventure.
