Island Explorers: A Journey to the Philippines

Materials Needed

  • World Map or Globe
  • Printable Outline Map of the Philippines (simple, large shapes)
  • Coloring tools (crayons, markers, colored pencils)
  • Construction Paper or Cardstock
  • Index Cards or small sticky notes
  • Scissors and Glue/Tape
  • (Optional) Playdough or modeling clay
  • (Optional) Access to visual resources (pictures of Tarsiers, Chocolate Hills, or Filipino food)

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, Valentina will be able to:

  1. Define the term "archipelago" and locate the Philippines on a world map.
  2. Identify and label the three major island groups of the Philippines (Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao).
  3. Create a visual display highlighting one unique cultural or natural feature of the Philippines.

Success Criteria

You know you are successful when:

  • You can point to the Philippines on the globe.
  • Your Philippine map has the three main sections correctly labeled.
  • You can share one cool new fact about the Philippines with a friend or family member.

Phase 1: Hook and Introduction (10 Minutes)

The Archipelago Challenge

Educator Talking Points: "Valentina, imagine a country that isn't just one big piece of land, but thousands of little pieces sprinkled across the ocean! What do we call a large group of islands clustered together? It starts with an 'A'..." (Wait for response, introduce the term 'archipelago').

  • Hook Question: Did you know the Philippines is an archipelago made up of over 7,600 islands? That's more islands than days in 20 years!
  • Locating the Philippines (I Do): Let's find this amazing country on our world map. Notice how it sits right in the path of the Pacific Ocean. It looks like a long, thin necklace of green islands.
  • Stating Objectives: Today, we are going to become Island Explorers. We will learn how this huge puzzle of islands is organized and discover some of the most exciting things about Filipino culture and nature.

Phase 2: Content Delivery and Guided Practice (35 Minutes)

A. The Three Main Regions (I Do/We Do)

Educator Talking Points: "Even though there are thousands of islands, the Philippines is usually divided into three big sections, or teams. Knowing these three teams helps us understand the geography."

  1. Luzon (Loo-Zon): This is the giant northern island, where the capital city, Manila, is located. It’s home to towering mountains and bustling cities. (The Brain/Head)
  2. Visayas (Vee-Sigh-Yas): This is the group of smaller, central islands, famous for beautiful beaches, diving, and sweet mangoes. (The Heart/Center)
  3. Mindanao (Min-Dah-Now): This is the large southern island, known for its rich cultural traditions, rainforests, and unique fruits. (The Feet/Roots)

Activity: The Island Trio Map Challenge (We Do)

Instructions: Use your outline map of the Philippines. We are going to divide and label the map using colors or markers:

  • Step 1: Divide: Gently draw two imaginary lines separating the large Northern section (Luzon), the central cluster (Visayas), and the large Southern section (Mindanao).
  • Step 2: Color and Label: Color each section a different color and clearly label them (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao).
  • Formative Check: Ask Valentina to point to each section and repeat the name. ("Which section is famous for beaches?" - Visayas.)

B. Spotlight on Filipino Treasures (You Do - Choice Activity)

Educator Talking Points: "Now that we know where the islands are, let's find out what treasures they hold! You get to choose one area to focus on."

Instructions: Choose ONE of the following three options to research briefly (using simple books, provided pictures, or a quick internet search) and create a visual representation on an index card. This card will be your "Fact File."

  1. Option 1: Amazing Animals (e.g., The Philippine Tarsier)
    • Task: Draw a picture of the Tarsier (one of the smallest primates in the world, famous for its giant eyes). Write one fact about its size or diet.
  2. Option 2: Marvelous Mountains (e.g., The Chocolate Hills)
    • Task: Draw the Chocolate Hills (hundreds of perfectly shaped, grassy mounds in the Visayas). If using playdough, model three small hills. Explain why they are called "chocolate."
  3. Option 3: Delicious Dishes (e.g., Adobo)
    • Task: Research or discuss Adobo (a popular savory dish often made with chicken or pork marinated in soy sauce and vinegar). Draw the ingredients or the finished dish. Write down the two main flavors.

Success Check: Valentina presents her Fact File card, explaining what she chose and why that treasure is important to the Philippines.

Phase 3: Review and Wrap-Up (10 Minutes)

Closure Activity: 3-2-1 Recap

Use a new sticky note or piece of paper for this assessment.

  • 3 Things I learned: (e.g., archipelago, Tarsier, Luzon).
  • 2 Main Island Groups I can name: (Luzon, Visayas, or Mindanao).
  • 1 Question I still have: (Allows for learner reflection and future exploration).

Summative Assessment

Map Presentation: Valentina uses her labeled map to briefly guide the educator/family member through her "Island Tour," pointing to the three regions and presenting her chosen Fact File card. This demonstrates mastery of Objectives 2 and 3.

Differentiation and Extension

Scaffolding (For learners needing extra support):

  • Pre-labeling: Provide the three main island group names already written on the map outline, allowing the learner only to color and match.
  • Simplified Choice: Instead of research, provide three photos of the cultural treasures and have the learner choose and describe the one they find most interesting.

Extension (For advanced or quick learners):

  • Language Challenge: Research and practice saying the traditional Filipino greeting, Mabuhay! (mah-boo-high), which means "Long Live" or "Welcome."
  • Flag Design: Research the colors and symbols of the Philippine flag and design a simple travel logo or small flag for one of the three main regions.
  • Connecting to Home: If possible, research a Filipino-owned business or community member and discuss how their culture is represented locally.
