Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create various clay sculptures and understand the basics of working with clay.

Materials and Prep

  • Clay
  • Rolling pin or smooth cylindrical object
  • Clay tools (optional)
  • Wax paper or plastic wrap
  • Water and a small container
  • Newspaper or a clean working surface

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson. Just come with an open mind and a creative spirit!

Activities

  1. Introduction to Clay:

    Start by discussing what clay is and its different properties. Talk about how it can be molded and shaped into various forms.

  2. Exploring Clay:

    Give the student a small piece of clay and let them explore its texture and malleability. Encourage them to roll it, pinch it, and experiment with different shapes.

  3. Creating Basic Shapes:

    Show the student how to roll the clay into a ball, a coil, and a slab. Discuss the different techniques used to create these shapes and let them practice making their own.

  4. Building a Sculpture:

    Guide the student in creating a simple sculpture using the clay. Encourage them to use their imagination and experiment with different forms and textures.

  5. Finishing Touches:

    Once the sculpture is complete, demonstrate how to smooth out any rough edges or surfaces using water and clay tools (if available). Discuss the importance of adding details and texture to enhance the overall appearance of the sculpture.

  6. Clean Up:

    Remind the student to clean up their workspace and store any leftover clay properly for future use.
