Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply algebraic concepts to solve problems related to gaming.
Materials and Prep
- Pen/pencil
- Graph paper
- Calculator (optional)
- Prior knowledge of basic algebraic operations
Activities
-
Create a Character
Ask the student to design a character for a hypothetical video game. They should come up with a name, appearance, and special abilities for the character. Once the character is created, discuss with the student the different attributes that can be quantified, such as strength, speed, and health.
-
Assign Attribute Values
Assign numerical values to each attribute of the character created in the previous activity. For example, strength could be assigned a value of 10, speed a value of 8, and health a value of 100. Encourage the student to be creative and assign values that make sense within the context of the game.
-
Create Equations
Using the assigned attribute values, ask the student to create algebraic equations that represent different scenarios in the game. For instance, they could create an equation to calculate the damage inflicted by the character's special ability based on their strength and the opponent's health.
-
Solve Equations
Provide the student with a set of equations created in the previous activity and ask them to solve for the unknown variables. This will require the application of algebraic principles, such as combining like terms and solving for a variable.
Ninth Grade Talking Points
- "Algebra is a branch of mathematics that deals with symbols and the rules for manipulating those symbols."
- "In video games, algebra can be used to create and solve equations that represent different aspects of the game, such as character attributes and calculations for gameplay."
- "By understanding algebra, you can better understand the underlying mechanics of the game and make strategic decisions based on mathematical calculations."
- "Algebraic equations can help determine the outcome of battles, the effectiveness of special abilities, and the overall progression of the game."
- "By practicing algebraic problem-solving in a gaming context, you can improve your algebra skills while having fun."
