Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe different geometric shapes found at the playground.
Materials and Prep
- No materials required.
- Prior knowledge of basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) is helpful.
Activities
-
Take a virtual tour of a playground using pictures or videos. Observe and identify different geometric shapes present in the playground equipment.
-
Draw a simple map of a playground on a piece of paper. Label the different geometric shapes you identified in the previous activity.
-
Create a shape scavenger hunt at the playground. Make a list of different geometric shapes for you to find while playing. Check them off as you find them.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Did you know that shapes are all around us, even at the playground? Let's explore and find some shapes today!"
- "Look at this picture of a slide. What shape do you see? That's right, it's a triangle! Triangles have three sides and three corners."
- "Can you find a shape that has four sides and four corners? That's called a square! Look for something square-shaped at the playground."
- "We also have circles at the playground. Can you spot something that is round like a circle? Remember, circles have no corners and the edge is the same distance from the center all around."
- "Let's draw a map of the playground and label the shapes we find. This will help us remember and visualize them later."
- "Now it's time for a shape scavenger hunt! We have a list of shapes to find. Let's explore the playground and see how many we can find."
- "Great job! You have learned about different geometric shapes at the playground. Shapes are all around us, and it's fun to spot them wherever we go!"
