Amis Français : Numbers, Games, and Goûter!
Lesson Overview
Target Age: 8 years old (2nd Grade)
Duration: 30 Minutes
Topic: Numbers 1–5, Action Verbs, and French Snack Culture
Learning Objectives
- I can count from 1 to 5 in French (un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq).
- I can follow three physical commands in French (sautez, tournez, touchez votre nez).
- I can describe what "Le Goûter" is and name one French snack.
Materials Needed
- Flashcards with numbers 1–5 and corresponding dots
- A small ball or beanbag
- A small snack (ideally a piece of chocolate and bread, or a croissant)
- A device to play a short song
1. Introduction & Review (5 Minutes)
The Hook: "Imagine you are in a bakery in Paris. You want to buy some delicious treats, but the baker only speaks French! To get your snacks, we need to learn our numbers and some secret French moves."
Warm-up: Review previous knowledge.
- Teacher/Parent: "Bonjour! Comment ça va?" (Wait for response).
- Practice: "Je m'appelle [Name]. Merci!"
2. The "I Do": Learning Numbers 1–5 (5 Minutes)
Show the flashcards one by one. Use the "repeat after me" method with different voices (silly voice, whisper voice, giant voice).
- Un (Uh) - Hold up 1 finger
- Deux (Duh) - Hold up 2 fingers
- Trois (Twah) - Hold up 3 fingers
- Quatre (Kat-ruh) - Hold up 4 fingers
- Cinq (Sank) - Hold up 5 fingers
Pro Tip: In France, people start counting with their thumb for "Un"! Try counting the French way.
3. The "We Do": Ball Toss & Movement (8 Minutes)
Activity 1: Counting Toss
Toss a soft ball or beanbag back and forth. Each time you catch it, say the next number. Start at 1 and go to 5, then try to go backward (5, 4, 3, 2, 1)!
Activity 2: Jacques a Dit (Simon Says)
Introduce three action words:
- Sautez! (Soh-tay) - Jump!
- Tournez! (Toor-nay) - Turn around!
- Touchez votre nez! (Too-shay vot-ruh nay) - Touch your nose!
4. Culture Connection: Le Goûter (5 Minutes)
Story Time: In France, children have a special mini-meal at 4:00 PM called "Le Goûter" (Luh Goo-tay). It is a sweet snack time to give them energy after school.
The Snack: Show a picture or a real piece of bread and chocolate. A classic "Goûter" is a piece of baguette with a square of dark chocolate inside (un pain au chocolat).
Practice: "Miam miam! C'est bon!" (Yum yum! It's good!)
5. The "You Do": The Number Race (5 Minutes)
Lay the number flashcards (1–5) across the room.
- The teacher calls out a number: "Trois!"
- The student must run/hop to that card and say "Trois, merci!"
- Challenge: Call out "Sautez à quatre!" (Jump to four!).
6. Conclusion & Recap (2 Minutes)
Summary: Ask the student:
- "How do you say 1, 2, 3 in French?"
- "What is the name of the special 4:00 PM snack time?"
- "Show me how to 'Tournez'!"
Final Song/Sign-off: Sing a quick "Au Revoir" song to the tune of "Farmer in the Dell":
Au revoir mes amis, (Goodbye my friends)
Au revoir mes amis,
Merci beaucoup, au revoir,
Au revoir mes amis!
Success Criteria
| Skill | Success Looks Like... |
|---|---|
| Numbers | Student can count to 5 independently with minimal prompts. |
| Listening | Student reacts correctly to at least 2 of the 3 action commands. |
| Culture | Student can explain that French kids eat a sweet snack at 4 PM. |
Adaptations
For a Challenge: Introduce numbers 6–10 (six, sept, huit, neuf, dix) or add more complex commands like "Touchez vos oreilles" (Touch your ears).
For Extra Support: Focus only on numbers 1–3 and use the flashcards as visual cues during every game.
