Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to read and comprehend a short Minecraft-themed story.
Materials and Prep
- Computer or tablet with internet access
- Paper and pencil
- Minecraft-themed story (can be found online or created by the teacher)
Activities
-
Introduce the concept of reading comprehension by discussing how it helps us understand and enjoy stories.
-
Read the Minecraft-themed story together, taking turns reading aloud. Encourage the student to follow along with their finger as you read.
-
After reading the story, ask the student comprehension questions to check their understanding. For example, "What was the main character's name?" or "What was the problem the character faced?"
-
Have the student draw a picture of their favorite part of the story. Encourage them to use details from the text to support their drawing.
-
Ask the student to retell the story in their own words. This can be done orally or in writing, depending on their skill level.
Transitional-Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Reading is like exploring a Minecraft world, but instead of blocks, we explore words and sentences."
- "When we read a story, we can imagine the characters and places in our minds, just like we imagine building things in Minecraft."
- "Understanding what we read is important because it helps us enjoy the story and remember what happened."
- "Drawing a picture of our favorite part of the story helps us remember it better and shows our creativity."
- "Retelling a story means telling it again in our own words. It's like telling our friends about a cool thing we built in Minecraft."
