The Digital Fire: Reimagining Prometheus for the 21st Century
Materials Needed
- Access to the Internet/Research database
- Notebook or digital drafting tool (Google Docs/Notion)
- Graph paper or graphing software (Desmos)
- Copy of the Prometheus myth (summary provided in lesson)
- "Ethical Dilemma" cards (can be digital or printed)
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, Maisie will be able to:
- English: Transpose ancient archetypes into a modern narrative setting using contemporary voice and dialogue.
- Maths: Model the "spread of fire" using exponential growth equations to simulate viral information sharing.
- History/HASS: Compare the social consequences of "disruptive technology" in Ancient Greece versus the modern digital age.
- Science: Investigate the biological reality of liver regeneration (the Promethean punishment) versus modern bio-tech possibilities.
- Life Skills: Evaluate the ethics of whistleblowing and "open-source" information in a corporate world.
1. Introduction: The Hook (15 Minutes)
Scenario: Imagine Prometheus didn’t steal fire from Mount Olympus. Instead, he’s a disgruntled Senior Developer at Olympus Cloud Solutions. He just leaked the "Fire Protocol"—an algorithm that grants every human free, unlimited energy and total data privacy—to the public on an encrypted forum. Zeus, the CEO, is furious. The board of directors wants him "chained" to a legal desk for eternity.
Discussion Questions:
- Is information the "fire" of our century? Why or why not?
- In the original myth, humanity was cold and starving. In our world, what is the "cold" we are shivering in that technology might fix?
- Is a "gift" really a gift if it comes with the wrath of a powerful entity (like a government or a tech giant)?
2. Body: Content and Practice
Part A: The History and HASS Context (I Do)
In Ancient Greece, "Fire" represented techne (technology/craft). The gods kept it to maintain the hierarchy. When Prometheus gave it to humans, he disrupted the "Natural Order."
- Modern Parallel: Think about Open Source software vs. Proprietary software. Or think about "Leakers" like Edward Snowden or Chelsea Manning.
- Activity: Compare the "Ancient Hierarchy" (Gods > Heroes > Humans) with the "Modern Hierarchy" (Big Tech/Governments > Influencers > Users). Who holds the "Fire" today?
Part B: The Science of the Punishment (We Do)
In the myth, an eagle eats Prometheus’s liver every day, and it regrows every night. Is this scientifically possible?
- Scientific Fact: The liver is the only internal organ capable of natural regeneration. As little as 25% of a liver can regenerate into a whole liver.
- The Task: Research "Hepatocyte Regeneration." Why did the Greeks choose the liver? Was it a lucky guess or early anatomical knowledge? How does this compare to modern 3D bio-printing of organs?
Part C: The Math of the Viral Spread (You Do - Math Application)
If Prometheus releases the "Fire Protocol" (an app/file), and it doubles its user base every hour, we are looking at exponential growth.
The Problem:
- Assume 1 person has the "Fire" at Hour 0.
- The formula is y = 1(2)^x, where x is hours.
- Calculate: How many people have the "Fire" after 12 hours? After 24 hours?
- Graph it: Create a graph showing the difference between a "Linear Spread" (adding 1,000 people an hour) vs. the "Exponential Spread." Which one represents a "Mythic" change?
Part D: Creative Writing (You Do - English Application)
Write a 500-word scene titled "The Chains of the NDA."
- The Setting: A high-rise boardroom or a sterile interrogation room.
- The Characters: A modern Prometheus (maybe a coder, a scientist, or a rebel) and a modern Zeus (a CEO, a General, or a Digital AI).
- The Goal: Use dialogue to show the conflict. Zeus must argue that humanity "isn't ready" for the gift. Prometheus must argue that the "Fire" belongs to everyone.
3. Life Skills: Ethical Decision Making
The "Disruption" Debate: If you discovered a technology that would provide free energy to everyone but would collapse the global economy and put millions out of work overnight, would you "give the fire"?
- List three pros and three cons of "unregulated progress."
- How do we handle the "fallout" of a good deed that has bad side effects?
Conclusion: Recap and Reflection
Summary: Today we looked at how an ancient story about a Titan and a torch is actually a story about data, biology, and the ethics of sharing power.
Exit Ticket (Reflection):
- What is one modern "monster" that was created by our modern "fire" (technology)? (e.g., Cyberbullying, Deepfakes, Climate Change).
- In your year-long mythos, will your "gods" be digital, biological, or corporate? Why?
Assessment and Success Criteria
Success Criteria:
- Math: Correct calculation and graphing of exponential growth.
- English: A scene that maintains the "essence" of Prometheus while using 15-year-old appropriate modern slang/tech jargon.
- Science/HASS: A logical comparison between ancient mythic "magic" and modern biological/social realities.
Formative Assessment: Check-in during the "Viral Math" activity to ensure the concept of doubling is understood. Review the "NDA" dialogue for character voice.
Summative Assessment: The completed "Chains of the NDA" story and the "Fire Spread" graph will be added to Maisie’s "Modern Mythos Portfolio."
Differentiation Options
- For More Challenge: Instead of a simple doubling math problem, introduce a "decay rate" (e.g., people deleting the app due to government fear). How does that change the graph?
- For More Creative Support: Use a comic-strip template for the writing portion to visualize the "Modern Olympus."
- Alternative Modality: Instead of a written story, Maisie could record a "Podcast Interview" with Prometheus the Whistleblower.
