In this interactive session, Cheng will dive into the building blocks of Chinese characters through physical movement, vocal practice, and hands-on writing. We will focus on the fundamental "Single Vowels" and the graceful "Falling Strokes" that give Chinese calligraphy its unique shape.

Materials Needed

• Laminated grid paper (Tian Zi Ge style)
• Dry erase markers and an eraser (or cloth)
• A handheld mirror
• A ribbon, silk scarf, or a "magic wand" (a stick or ruler)
• Flashcards with "i", "u", "ü" and the strokes 横, 竖, 撇, 捺
• Painter's tape (for floor activities)

• Phonetics: Cheng can distinguish between the "u" and "ü" sounds by adjusting his tongue/lip position.

1. Introduction: The Magic Brush Hook (5 Minutes)

The Hook: Tell Cheng he is a "Calligraphy Ninja." Explain that Chinese characters aren't just "drawings"—they are built with specific "moves" just like martial arts. Today, we unlock the secrets of the "Slashing Blades" (撇 and 捺).

Objective Review: "Today, we are going to use our whole bodies to 'air-write,' practice our sounds using a mirror, and master our marker skills on the grid paper."

2. Vocal Practice: The Three Vowels (15 Minutes)

Focus: i, u, ü

• I Do: Show Cheng the "i" card. Model the sound: "i" (sounds like 'ee' in 'bee'). Show the mouth shape (wide smile). Use the mirror to show your teeth.
• We Do: Say "i" together while looking in the mirror. Transition to "u" (sounds like 'oo' in 'boot'). Mouth shape is a small, tight circle. Repeat for "ü" (the hardest one!).
  • Tip: Tell Cheng to make the "i" sound inside his mouth but keep his lips in the "u" circle shape.
• You Do: Play "Sound Match." You point to a card (i, u, or ü) and Cheng must make the sound and the correct mouth shape. Reverse it: You make the shape silently, and he must guess the sound.

3. Gross Motor: The Falling Strokes (15 Minutes)

Focus: 撇 (piě) and 捺 (nà)

• I Do: Introduce 撇 (piě): The Left-Fall. Use a ribbon or "magic wand." Start high and "slash" down to the left. It looks like a falling leaf. Introduce 捺 (nà): The Right-Fall. Start high and "slide" down to the right. It looks like a playground slide.
• We Do (Body Writing): Stand up!
  • Use painter's tape on the floor to create a giant "V" shape (inverted).
  • Walk the 撇 path (starting from the top, walking down to the left).
  • Walk the 捺 path (starting from the top, walking down to the right).
• You Do: "Air Writing Challenge." Call out "Piě!" and Cheng must use his whole arm to slash the air to the left. Call out "Nà!" and he slashes to the right. Increase speed for fun.

4. Fine Motor: Marker Practice (20 Minutes)

Focus: 横, 竖, 撇, 捺

• I Do: On the laminated grid, demonstrate the four strokes.
  • 横 (héng): Left to right.
  • 竖 (shù): Top to bottom.
  • 撇 (piě): Top-right to bottom-left.
  • 捺 (nà): Top-left to bottom-right (with a little "foot" at the end).
• We Do: Cheng traces over your strokes on the laminated paper. Remind him: "Always start at the top!" or "Left to right!"
• You Do (Independent Practice): Cheng fills a row for each stroke.

• Summative: The completed laminated grid sheet. Check for stroke direction and proportion.

Homework

1. The Sound Hunt: Find three objects around the house that start with the "i" sound (e.g., "eagle" in English, but emphasizing the 'ee' sound) or "u" sound.
2. Water Calligraphy: Using a cup of water and a paintbrush (or even a finger), practice writing 横, 竖, 撇, and 捺 on the sidewalk or a piece of construction paper. Watch them "disappear" as they dry!
3. Mirror Check: Practice the "ü" sound in the bathroom mirror 5 times each morning to make sure the lips are perfectly round.
