Lesson Plan: Hello Teacher (老师好)
Lesson Overview
Subject: Mandarin Chinese Language & Culture
Target Learner: Cheng (Homeschool context, adaptable for classroom/group)
Duration: 60 Minutes
Focus: Essential classroom greetings and instructional commands using Total Physical Response (TPR) and interactive play.
Materials Needed
- Two puppets or stuffed animals (one designated as "Teacher," one as "Student")
- Flashcards with the characters and icons for: 看 (Eye/Look), 听 (Ear/Listen), 好 (Thumbs up/Good)
- A small mirror
- Reward stickers or a "Star Chart"
- Optional: A bell or chime to signal "class starts"
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, Cheng will be able to:
- Recognize the meaning of “老师好” (Lǎoshī hǎo) and “同学好” (Tóngxué hǎo) through listening and pronounce them with accurate tones.
- Recognize the meaning of instructional verbs “看” (Kàn - look), “听” (Tīng - listen), and the adjective “好” (Hǎo - good) and perform the corresponding physical actions.
- Demonstrate appropriate cultural etiquette when greeting a teacher in a Chinese-speaking context.
Success Criteria
- Pronunciation: Student can produce the "h" sound in "hǎo" and the "sh" in "lǎoshī" clearly.
- Aural Recognition: Student performs the correct action immediately when hearing "Kàn" or "Tīng."
- Contextual Use: Student correctly identifies who is the "Lǎoshī" and who is the "Tóngxué."
Lesson Procedure
1. Introduction: The Magic Greeting (10 Minutes)
- The Hook: Use a puppet to "wake up" the lesson. The puppet bows and says "Lǎoshī hǎo!" Explain that in Chinese culture, showing respect to the teacher starts the "learning magic."
- Discussion: Ask Cheng, "How do we usually greet friends vs. teachers?" Explain that today he becomes a "Tóngxué" (student/classmate).
- Objective Setting: "Today, you’ll learn the secret words to start any Chinese class and how to follow directions like a pro!"
2. Body: Presentation & "I Do" (15 Minutes)
- The Big Three (Commands): Introduce the three core words with exaggerated gestures:
- 看 (Kàn): Point to eyes, then point to a flashcard. "Kàn, kàn, kàn!"
- 听 (Tīng): Cup hand to ear. "Tīng, tīng, tīng!"
- 好 (Hǎo): Big thumbs up. "Hǎo!" (Explain it means good/okay).
- The Greetings:
- Show a picture of a teacher. Say 老师 (Lǎoshī). Add 好 (hǎo). Repeat: "Lǎoshī hǎo!" (Hello Teacher).
- Show a picture of a student. Say 同学 (Tóngxué). Add 好 (hǎo). Repeat: "Tóngxué hǎo!" (Hello Student).
- Mirror Practice: Use the mirror to check mouth shapes for "Lǎo" and "Tīng."
3. Guided Practice: "We Do" (15 Minutes)
- The Echo Game: The teacher says the word in different volumes (whisper, shout, robot voice). Cheng must echo back exactly the same way while doing the gesture.
- Simon Says (Mandarin Version):
- Teacher says "Lǎoshī says: Kàn!" -> Cheng points to eyes.
- Teacher says "Tīng!" (without saying Lǎoshī says) -> Cheng should stay still.
- Integrate "Hǎo" by giving a double thumbs up when he gets it right.
- Role Swap: Let Cheng be the "Lǎoshī." He holds the puppet and gives the commands "Kàn" or "Tīng" to the teacher.
4. Independent Application: "You Do" (15 Minutes)
- The "Director" Challenge: Set up a scene with toys/stuffed animals. Cheng must "teach" the toys. He must greet them (Tóngxué hǎo!) and tell them to look (Kàn!) at a specific book or listen (Tīng!) to a sound.
- Mini-Roleplay:
- Teacher leaves the room (or hides behind a chair).
- Teacher "enters" the classroom.
- Cheng must stand up, bow slightly, and say "Lǎoshī hǎo!"
- Teacher responds "Tóngxué hǎo!" and gives the command "Tīng" for the next instruction.
5. Conclusion: Closure & Recap (5 Minutes)
- The High-Five Recap: For every word Cheng remembers and pronounces correctly (Lǎoshī, Tóngxué, Kàn, Tīng, Hǎo), he gets a "High-Five" or a sticker.
- Reflection: Ask Cheng: "Which word was the easiest to remember? Which gesture was the funnest?"
- Final Greeting: End the class formally by saying "Tóngxué hǎo!" and having Cheng respond "Lǎoshī hǎo!"
Assessment Methods
- Formative: Observation during the "Simon Says" game. Does the student respond correctly to the verbal cue without needing a visual prompt?
- Summative: At the end of the lesson, show the three icon cards (Eye, Ear, Thumbs Up) in random order. The student must say the Chinese word for each without assistance.
Differentiation Options
- Scaffolding (If struggling): Focus only on "Kàn" and "Tīng" first. Use physical touch (lightly tapping the ear for Tīng) to reinforce the connection.
- Extension (If advanced): Introduce “我会...” (Wǒ huì... - I can...). "Wǒ huì kàn" (I can look), "Wǒ huì tīng" (I can listen).
Homework / Extension Activity
The "Home Teacher" Project:
- Teach one person at home (Mom, Dad, or a sibling) how to say "Lǎoshī hǎo."
- Draw a picture of an eye and an ear. Label them with the characters (or have an adult help label them) 看 and 听.
- Secret Mission: Next time we start our lesson, try to be the first one to say "Lǎoshī hǎo" before I even speak!
